As we enter the spring season, many people are excited to start their spring-cleaning. We want to make sure the interior and exterior of our homes are pristine, while also donating or throwing out unwanted items. As you work to spring-clean your house, you may want to take some time to make sure some other important items in your life are organized. It’s also the perfect time to get your estate plan in order. To do this, you need to check off a few different areas. The first thing to verify is your will. If you don’t have a will, you need to make arrangements with an estate planning attorney to get one in place immediately. You don’t want your family to have to deal with the probate process without knowing your wishes after you pass away, so it’s imperative to get this done. If you do have a will, check and make sure the information is still accurate. You may need to make some updates to reflect any new life changes. and confirm that they are willing to perform in their role if they are needed. You want someone you trust, who has your best interests at heart, making these calls on your behalf. As a final note, you should review the beneficiaries on your 401(k) and life insurance policy to make sure they are still correct. Oftentimes, when people get divorced, they forget to update those beneficiaries, which can bring even more difficulties to your family if you pass away. Make sure your beneficiaries are who you want them to be. The spring season is the perfect time to reflect on the past while looking forward. Check your estate planning — your will, your beneficiaries, and your powers of attorney — so you and your loved ones can have peace of mind about the future.
