Farmhands harvesting tobacco leaves on a nearby farm.
We just happened to be in Maysville during the tobacco harvest, and we watched a group of young men carefully cutting and carrying enormous tobacco leaves to a truck and driving each load of leaves to a nearby barn to dry. Nimbly leaping into the rafters, the men passed the tobacco leaves from one to another high up into the barn three or four stories above, and each leaf was hung to dry. A few miles away, we visited the historic village of Old Washington where some of the buildings were built from the original settlers’ flat boat planks. The tiny log post office, built in 1789, was the first one established west of the Appalachian Mountains and is still in use today. There are charming towns all over America, but it is rare to find one that opens its arms to visitors with as much warmth as Maysville and also has such a fun variety of things to do. How grateful we are that we wandered down to the shore in Aberdeen to have a look across the Ohio River.
