M193 Ball

The M193 has a 55-grain projectile with no tip identification. In an effort to reduce weight, the 5.56 x 45 mm cartridge first appeared in 1957 as an experimental military cartridge. In 1964, it was officially adopted by the U.S. Army as the 5.56 mm Ball cartridge M193. The cartridge was first combat-tested in Vietnam in the early 1960s.

The Mk257 Armor Piercing Incendiary-Dim Tracer has a 619-grain projectile and gray/lavender tip identification. The projectile has an armor-piercing hardened-steel core, a point filler of incendiary composition and a pyrotechnic charge which permits observation of the round’s trajectory from 100 yds to 1,600 yds. This cartridge is used to engage armored targets. This cartridge reduces the possibility of locating the weapon when paired with night vision devices.
