My journey in physical therapy has taken me to multiple places — most recently, to right here at Gilbert Physical Therapy in Camp Hill — but it all began in my hometown of Follansbee, West Virginia. If you’ve never heard of it, you’re not the only one! Follansbee is a tiny river town with just under 3,000 residents. It was there that I played high school football and basketball and my appreciation for athleticism grew. It was also where I found physical therapy. My parents had always told me, “Be like your cousin Ryan.” I was seven years younger than Ryan, and at the time, he had been going to school to become a physical therapist. I wanted to be just like him. I really admired what he was doing, and as an athlete, I knew how valuable it was to properly train and recover from your injuries. So, I enrolled at West Virginia University and completed my undergraduate degree and my doctorate in physical therapy. The next leg of my PT adventure took me north to Ohio but still close to my hometown. I started as a therapist in Steubenville, Ohio, and I actually had the chance to help build a physical therapy program within a medical facility. It was an incredible opportunity to put my skills to good use and offer a new form of healing and care to the patients there.

I sustained an ankle injury while playing high school sports, but it was actually the neck injury I had while in graduate school that completely shook my world. I wasn’t able to eat, sleep, or just function without shooting pain. It was severe and had a great effect on my life. But with the help of a physical therapist, I got my life back again. Whenever I see a patient suffering from debilitating neck pain, I have an instant flashback to when I was in their shoes. I’m honored to be the one to say, “You’re going to feel better soon” and then be able to deliver on that promise. I’m proud to be part of this team at Gilbert Physical Therapy Camp Hill, and more than that, I’m happy that I get to live out my calling. Thank you for entrusting me with your care. I’m happy I did. That’s how I found myself at the next juncture in my physical therapy journey: Gilbert Physical Therapy Camp Hill, where I’ve been since this past summer. I was considering another clinic before Gilbert PT, but I was drawn here because I could tell that I would be working in an environment that fostered collaboration. Top 5 Healthy Life Hacks to Have an Awesome Morning

Getting your day started with coffee isn’t always enough. Sometimes, you need to give yourself an extra boost, especially when you have little energy or trouble focusing. For an awesome start to your day, here are five tips to get you going right off the bat. Wake up 5 minutes early. What’s the power of five minutes? It can be more than you think. Spend this time doing simple breathing exercises or a quick meditation so you can get focused for the rest of the day. If that’s not your style, you can prepare a quick to-do list for your day ahead. Either way, it’s always nice to have a little extra time for yourself without losing too much sleep. Start with green tea, then coffee. A cup of coffee at 7 a.m. can leave you burned out by 10 a.m. Try swapping it with green tea for a more gentle wake-up call. After that, you can brew your favorite coffee to keep you going strong. This practice also might help you consume less caffeine overall! Take a quick morning walk — and have your meetings on the go. Morning meetings can make us want to fall asleep again. Don’t spend all of them sitting down if you don’t have to! Not only will morning walks help you wake up, but they can also add some extra physical activity to your day. Write in your journal. Who says you have to journal at the end of the day when you’re tired and ready to sleep? You can journal in the morning about what happened yesterday and

the things you’re looking forward to that day. Journaling can remind you of your daily goals and motivate you to stick to your commitments.

Pack your lunch (or snacks!). Staying on track with your goals starts with having the energy to do them. Plan a healthy balance of fats, vegetables, carbohydrates, and proteins. This can be as simple as assembling dips, carrots, wraps, and salads each morning.

You’re Not Alone Refer Your Friends and Family to PT and Help Them Feel Better

Our experiences give our wisdom weight. Many of us learn the harsh truth about love as teenagers or stumble through the early stages of our careers. Yet, each tough experience gives us the knowledge we need to better navigate the world ahead of us. Your journey to pain recovery is no different. If you are a former or current patient who has experienced relief from physical therapy, you have wisdom worth sharing! This month, we want to encourage you to share that truth with those you care about.

Remind them that you will support them when treatment feels too difficult and use your own experiences as a guide for what they can expect. A little empathy just might take the fear out of treatment. Encourage: Sometimes taking the first step is the hardest part, so make it easier by gently nudging your loved one toward physical therapy. Offer to set up a carpool schedule for their appointments, set up video calls for encouragement each evening for their at-home exercises, or help them set tangible goals. It’s amazing to see what a little motivation and support in the journey of healing can do for a patient’s morale. Engage: Some patients need cold hard facts before they commit to a plan. If you have a loved one who cannot comprehend how exercise can help with pain relief, ask our team of experts for help! We are always willing to consult with potential patients to guide them through the treatment process and provide tangible studies, information, and progress reports to satisfy their itch for facts.

In essence, help us help others! It’s as easy as the three E’s.

Zesty Orange Cranberry Sauce

BRAIN THERAPY!

Skip the can-shaped cranberry sauce this year and bring a jar of homemade sauce to Thanksgiving instead. This easy recipe can be made ahead of the big event and keeps for 10 days in the fridge.

Ingredients

• 1/2 cup orange juice, freshly squeezed • 1/2 cup water • 3/4 cup plus 2 tbsp sugar

• 12 oz fresh cranberries • 2 tsp orange zest • Salt to taste

Directions

1. In a medium saucepan, heat the orange juice, water, and sugar to a boil. Add other ingredients, then bring mixture back to boiling. 2. Reduce the heat to medium and cook gently for 10–12 minutes, until the cranberries burst. 3. Transfer the sauce to a bowl or jar, cover, and refrigerate until serving.
