‘A song of beauty and light and life.’ The Guardian (UK)
Songs of the Bulbul Aakash Odedra Company
Birdsong, like dance, is ephemeral. It exists only in the moment – vanishing as soon as it is sung.
UK AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE SEASON
From award-winning UK choreographer and dancer Aakash Odedra comes a transformative experience that transcends physical and emotional boundaries. A place where the graceful yet powerful art of Kathak dance and Sufi storytelling intertwine to create a dialogue between intense physicality and a spiritual journey. Songs of the Bulbul is a stunning solo dance work inspired by an ancient Sufi myth of a bulbul (or nightingale) held in captivity. The beauty of this songbird’s melody serves as a metaphor for the fleeting moments of dance, and life itself. From Persia to the Indian subcontinent, this tale of sacrifice and beauty explores the idea that freedom can only be found in the ultimate release. Rooted in the music, dance and poetry traditions of Sufism, Songs of the Bulbul seamlessly blends Indian classical music and orchestral elements for a contemplative and captivating experience. Aakash Odedra’s powerful performance poses a universal question: will we remain confined to the material world like the caged bird, or will we soar toward liberation and unity with the divine?
