Gracie Green
SOUTH AFRICA
An exhibition celebrating the prodigious lifetime of cultural and artistic contribution of Gracie Green, a major figure in the early development of the Balgo art movement. Across a long career, Gracie remained singular, her innovative style of combining lively figuration within finely dotted topographies allowing stories to unfold dynamically across the canvas. From early work at Balgo to a long partnership with Mangkaja Arts, her works embody a weighty legacy of sharing knowledge. Presented with The Berndt Museum and The Cruthers Collection of Women’s Art at Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery with support from Mangkaja Arts 14 Feb – 4 Apr KURNTUMARRAJARRA / WA Tue – Sat 11am – 4pm
The Berndt Museum houses a vast archive of Indigenous knowledge and artistic creation, including 810 drawings made by senior Aboriginal men at the pastoral station of Birrundudu in 1945. This epic collection, which has rarely been seen and never exhibited, is a profound gift from ancestors to their communities today. Birrundudu Drawings showcases over 100 of these works in an exhibition that rewrites Indigenous Australian art history.
South African artist Thania Petersen invites you into a charged, poetic and immersive world of song, scent and ritual. Through two major installations, she reclaims histories and cultural memory in ways both personal and communal. Tracing the journey of Sufi song traditions, Thania’s newly commissioned multi-channel sound work Jieker , links northern Australia (Yolŋu), Makassar and Cape Town, evoking a call and response across the ocean space. Rampies Sny invites you to join in creating thousands of fragrant herb sachets, a practice rooted in Cape Malay tradition and reimagined for each place it appears. This powerful multi-sensory exhibition will linger long after you leave.
