Water chestnut is an invasive plant spe- cies that can crowd out local plants and take over a habitat. Such a situation can have serious effects on native fish populations. Other species, including waterfowl, pollinating insects, and animals like beaver and others depen- dent on a riverine environment can be af- fected.. The OECF is open for another round of grant applications. Deadline for applica- tions is Nov. 8 and grants can go to non- profit groups, conservation authorities, school districts, municipalities, and First Na- tion groups in areas affected by a toxic spill. This year there are 13 communities where penalties were collected that went into the OECF fund. TORONTO | Local environmental groups have a chance to cash in on the mistakes of polluters through a provincial grant program. The provincial government penalizes companies responsible for toxic spills that take place within Ontario or who fail to meet provincial environmental protection regulations. Penalties include fines and that money goes into the Ontario Community Environ- ment Fund (OECF) to help support environ- mental improvement projects, with priority going to watershed sites where any toxic spills take place. The latest round of OECF grant approvals will see $7800 go to the Ontario Invasive Plant Council Ltd. The Peterborough-based non-profit group has a project proposal for removing
