The story unfolds during a celebratory dinner at the home of the affluent Birling family in 1912. The joyous occasion is disrupted by the unexpected arrival of a mysterious figure identifying himself as Inspector Goole. Goole informs the family that a young working- class woman named Eva Smith has died by suicide after consuming disinfectant. He proceeds to question each member of the Birling family – Arthur, Sybil, Sheila, and Eric – as well as Gerald Croft, Sheila’s fiancé – revealing their individual connections to the young woman and their part in her tragic demise.
