Players of St. Francis-Xavier Catholic High School Varsity girls’ softball team are hoping to win big this year. “We’ve got girls from 9th to 12th grade,” said coach David Mackinnon. “We’re cur- rently in a rebuild, but I know we will be competitive.” The Spring softball high school began this week. The girls started practicing on the first week of May. “It didn’t give us too much time to be ready, but we are,” explained the coach. The St. Francis-Xavier players will face off against seven other teams. Some of them include Casselman and Embrun. “We have a pretty young team,” said Mackinnon. “We’re doing a lot of development.” Part of the Prescott-Russell high school league for about 10 years, the team has yet to win a championship. “We had a lot of our older players leave after graduating last year,” said the coach. “But we still have some key, solid players left.” This year’s strategy will be, in the coach’s own words, to “be tight on defence and to have every player play their positions consistently, all while being patient.” On the team are; Madison Wardle, Chloe Lavallee, Caitlin Harrison, Kaitlyn Provot, Alys- sa Colizza, Sophie Colizza, Sonya Munaket, Maylee Matchett, Katrine Gagnier, Elizabeth St Hillaire and Olivia Groulx.
