A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 9

This week the Year 9 students have been busy doing their in house DofE training on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. This was a great success with students learning a variety of skills to aid them when it comes to their expedition trips in June and July. Students are reminded to keep up their DofE volunteering outside of school and to ensure that their assessors sign off on their completed hours. The DofE external expeditions take place on the following dates: Practice Expeditions (Surrey Hills): Friday 7 - Saturday 8 June; Sunday 9 - Monday 10 June; Friday 21 - Saturday 22 June. Assessed Expeditions (Ashdown Forest): Sunday 23 - Monday 24 June; Friday 5 - Saturday 6 July; Sunday 7 - Monday 8 July. Communication about these events will have been sent home. Students need to make sure that they have all of the appropriate equipment in preparation for this e.g waterproofs, walking shoes, torches etc. It is Mental Health awareness week this week and, as such, in form time the Year 9 students have been doing mindfulness activities with their tutor group, looking at different strategies for dealing with anxiety to allow us to unwind and relax. This has included mindful colouring, meditative music and self reflection on how to conserve our own ‘mood’ batteries. Hopefully students will find this useful in preparation for GCSEs in Year 10. Congratulations to 9PFO for coming top of the leaderboard this week for epraise points. They are followed by 9FBH and then 9EPA. Congratulations to the Poetry by Heart finalists who submitted their poetry performances to the final. Unfortunately we did not win, but the students should be incredibly proud of their efforts, as their performances were absolutely incredible. Well done to the Solo performers: Lucy D (9EJO), Coco B (9SPI), Alexa M (9SPI) and Mia W (9FBH) and the Group performers: Andrea T (9EPA) and Ady N (9EPA), Amelia F (9SPI) and Charlotte H (9SPI), Elina S (9FWD) and Audrey C (9STH). Myself and Ms Lewis were delighted to welcome these students in for a celebration tea party during today’s AM registration.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

Turtles all the way down by John Green. Turtles all the way down follows the 16 year old character Aza Holmes as she struggles with OCD and anxiety. However, she embarks on a journey to find out the mysterious absence of her ex million best friend’s father, despite the dangers involved within this. I found this book really intriguing as it gives you a first hand perspective on the experiences that people struggling and persevering with mental illnesses face. It also delves into the strong connections of friendships and how they shape you to be the person you are today. ~ Recommended by Yasemin A, 11ERU
