NEWS

A project aiming to convert households into eco-friendly ‘super homes’, using distributed energy resources (DERs) such as solar panels, battery storage, heat pumps and electric vehicles, is underway at the International Energy Research Centre (IERC). Based at Tyndall National Institute in Cork, IERC is leading the ‘SuHSI’ (Super Home Smart Inverter for Irish Electricity Network) project, with funding from the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI). The project is targeting an augmented integration of DERs with the existing power grid, to help homeowners reduce their carbon footprint and energy bills and contribute to the overall sustainability of the electricity network. Smart inverters and advanced controls, including AI energy management systems, will be used to integrate DERs into the grid. Dr Sandipan Patra, Lead Researcher and Principal Investigator, said, “Our aim is to create a network of citizens who are committed to reducing their carbon footprint and promoting distributed energy resources. “This project provides resources and tools to assist individuals in becoming energy-active citizens and network operators in managing energy resources more efficiently.” www.ierc.ie IERC project seeks to transform existing stock into sustainable super homes

Acquisition aims to create one of Ireland’s largest renewables firms

Two Irish businesses specialising in renewables are to combine services and leadership teams in a bid to expand their footprint across the island of Ireland. NRG Panel, a Monaghan-based installer of solar panels and heat pumps, is acquiring JFW Renewables in Galway for an unspecified sum. The two firms collectively employ 125 people and have serviced more than 3,500 new customers over the past year. NRG was founded in 2015 and has grown rapidly since then, securing backing from Irish private equity firm Melior Equity Partners in 2023. JFW was founded in 2021, and provides residential and business customers with solar PV, battery and EV charging services. Dual bases are to be maintained in Monaghan and Galway, with the combined companies planning to expand

Council and construction firm fined following death of electrical engineer

Electrical Safety First rebrands to reflect net zero transition

UK safety charity Electrical Safety First (ESF) has unveiled a new visual brand identity to reflect the increasing role electricity will play in people’s lives in the transition to net zero. With over half of all UK domestic fires already caused by electrical faults, ESF is expanding its ambitions to ensure people avoid deaths and injuries caused by electricity. A new strapline, ‘Powering change + saving lives’, addresses the life-and-death nature of the charity’s work and highlights its triple approach of campaigning for legislative change, improving industry standards and

influencing consumer behaviour. A clear sub-brand architecture will ensure brand synergy across charity activations, including a modern, clean typeface hinting at digital displays on electronic devices and new ‘glowing’ electric green selected as the charity’s primary colour. Rory Carroll, Head of Communications at Electrical Safety First, said, “We are putting in place all the elements to ensure Electrical Safety First is there, as a resource, for everyone to safely enjoy this new electric age. Armed with the right information, people can avoid the dangers of electric shocks and fires.”

Matthew Campbell.

Newry Crown Court has issued fines for breaches of health and safety legislation following the death of an electrical engineer at Slieve Gullion Forest Park. Matthew Campbell, 24, died after he was struck by a falling tree when working in the park during Storm Ali on September 19, 2018. His line manager was also seriously injured by the falling tree. The work was part of a water mains rehabilitation project designed to improve water pressure in the forest park café. Fines of £20,000 were issued to Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, which manages the area of the forest park where the works were underway, and £30,000 to Matthew’s employer Lagan Construction Limited. Following an investigation, the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) concluded both employers failed to make a suitable and sufficient risk assessment. The Council also failed to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the safety of non-employees. www.hseni.gov.uk/advice-during- storms-and-bad-weather

Electric Picnic’s main stage to be powered by renewable energy

Electric Picnic is to power its main stage by renewable energy, laying claim as the first festival of its kind in the UK and Ireland to reduce its carbon footprint by installing mains power. Organiser Festival Republic received planning permission in April to build a new ESB substation to deliver grid power to the main stage. Electric Picnic will be seeking an energy supply from renewable generation such as onshore wind energy and large-scale solar projects, reducing the need to use temporary generators and ultimately carbon emissions associated with powering the main stage of the festival. Festival Republic’s Green Nation Charter pledges to power festivals with 100% renewable power by 2030. Thomas Cosby, owner of festival venue Stradbally Hall, said, “This Festival Republic

initiative ties in well with the estate’s programme towards carbon neutrality. It complements our existing renewable energy installations including biomass, hydroelectric, solar and sustainable forestry management.” Electric Picnic returns to Stradbally over August 16 to 18. www.electricpicnic.ie

EDA REGIONAL BUSINESS FORUM

NORTHERN IRELAND’S ELECTRICAL SECTOR HAS BEEN URGED TO EMBRACE RENEWABLES, THE EDATA DATA POOL, AND SUPPORT SERVICES AIMED AT ATTRACTING AND RETAINING STAFF AT AN EDA REGIONAL BUSINESS FORUM IN BELFAST… Jump on board the solarcoaster

Electrical businesses failing to embrace renewables could be out of business in five years, according to ECA Head of Technical Standards Gary Parker. Among speakers at an Electrical Distributors’ Association (EDA) Regional Business Forum, held in Titanic Hotel Belfast on April 17, Gary said the electrical sector is seeing its biggest upheaval since World War II. “Ten years ago, this industry didn’t exist,” he said, highlighting huge opportunities for wholesalers in green technologies such as electric vehicle (EV) installations, solar PV and battery energy storage systems. Urging the sector to get on board the “solarcoaster”, Gary said those failing to upskill in renewables could follow the fate of gas light operators in the 1880s and be out of business within five years. “Electrical contractors are changing into energy contractors,” he said. EV sales have rocketed since 2019 to

more than 1 million vehicles now on UK roads, while almost 1.5 million small-scale PV systems have been installed in the UK since 2009, including 29,000 in Northern Ireland. Competence is key for contractors and wholesalers, said Gary, highlighting EDA’s online training modules as a resource. With the NI Climate Change Act setting a target of 80% renewable electricity consumption by 2030, “that’s very, very soon,” he said. “Don’t get left behind selling gas lights.” Attended by 123 delegates, including representatives from 15 wholesalers and 38 affiliated businesses, the Forum also heard from EDA CEO Margaret Fitzsimons. EDA has 261 member companies, 55% of which have only one branch, she said, outlining the growing threat from Amazon and other online retailers as well as builders’ merchants moving into renewables such as heat pumps.

Further challenges identified in EDA’s latest State of the Sector Survey include pressure on margins and pricing, late payments, supply chain delays, downturns in demand and staff shortages, said Head of Marketing and Communications Anne Vessey. Data as a “silent sales team” Another focus of the Forum was encouraging delegates to support the EDATA data pool, a digital resource allowing wholesaler members to access and download product information without charge. Named Innovation of the Year at the Trade Association Awards 2024, EDATA is funded by manufacturers, which own and manage their product information hosted on the portal. EDATA already hosts data from 85 brands, covering over 250,000 products, said EDA Head of Digitalisation Richard Appleton, and acts as a “silent sales

team,” saving users time and money. Data is presented in a standard format, offering easy comparison between products for wholesalers and end customers. Extolling its virtues were Ian Hunter from Electrium Sales Ltd, a Siemens company featuring its products on EDATA, and Robbie McEnteggart from Intact Software in Dundalk, who conducted a live demo of the EDATA and Intact’s ERP system. “Everybody in this room has to get on board with using data to the best of their ability,” said Robbie. “It makes life easier for you, and it makes life easier for your industry.” Delegates also heard from Matthew Boutros of Derry Bros Customs Clearance, who offered practical customs guidance for NI businesses facing the new Windsor Framework red and green lane system from September. Firms hoping to use the green lane to import goods from GB not regarded as ‘at risk’ of entering the Republic of Ireland/EU should apply to the UK Internal Market Scheme. Green lane goods are exempt from full customs declarations, requiring only risk- based, intelligence-led controls. More complex declarations and EU

tariffs may apply to red lane goods, and firms should maintain detailed records to support potential relief claims through customs duty waiver and duty reimbursement schemes. Attracting and retaining staff Three speakers addressed the issue of a staffing shortage at the forum, with EDA Head of Education and Training Tracy Hewett offering the sobering statistic that losing a staff member on a £25,000 salary can result in a £30,000 dip in turnover. Companies were urged to use EDA’s upskilling resources, including its 12 product knowledge modules, classroom courses, 30-minute masterclasses, and various apprenticeship, training and recruitment services. “If you don’t stretch them, if you don’t use that talent, if you don’t show them what the future could be, they’re not going to stay with you,” said Tracy. Tom Jones from Kempston Controls outlined his company’s journey from zero to eight apprentices in two years, expected to climb to 12 by the summer. Kempston Controls uses EDA Apprenticeships Plus for shortlisting and interview management, while successful applicants move around different departments to find their best fit and

devote two hours per day to learning, with financial incentives offered for completion of modules. Clarity of purpose is key to keeping employees, said Jo Creed of J&S Development Services, as are “intrinsic” rewards such as acknowledgement, autonomy and personal growth. A sense of belonging is important, and employees should feel they are part of something and making a difference, while leadership style should be consistent. Offering an overview of the NI economy, Stuart Anderson from NI Chamber of Commerce said, “Having the right people with the right skills is unquestionably the biggest issue that comes across our table.” While NI effectively has full employment now, long-term sickness is overtaking caring responsibilities in keeping people out of the workforce. However, NI’s young population represents an opportunity for the electrical sector, he said, as do the region’s dual market access, regional city deals and its Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Centre. Negatives include the legacy impact of Stormont’s continual collapses, including stalled progress towards net zero targets and a lack of subsidies in comparison to other UK regions.

Building on the versatility and flexibility of its predecessor, the SpektroLED EVO downlight is an advanced evolution of the hugely popular and innovative SpektroLED. EVO offers selectable wattages, colour temperatures and six interchangeable bezel finishes. It comes in three versions, fixed, tilt and smart, and offers 108 downlights in one range. Features Depending on the required illumination, either 5W (up to 465 lumens) or 7W (up to 795 lumens) can be pre-selected via a switch on the lamp body. Once chosen, four correlated colour temperatures are available – 2700K, 3000K, 4000K and 6000K – and the desired colour temperature can also be selected by a sliding switch. Further customisation is then possible through the bezel options which allow the lamp to complement or contrast with a room’s décor or colourways. The smart EVO can be controlled for colour, temperature and on/off using Knightsbridge’s proprietary SmartKnight app.

The LED beam angle is 60° and the tilt variant can be adjusted to 90° as required.

50,000 hours of rated LED life and can be used with leading and trailing-edge dimmers, though compatibility should be verified beforehand. A five-year warranty guarantees peace of mind. Swarm function for extra comfort in open-plan offices Anyone sitting alone at a desk in an open- plan office is often working in an isolated pool of light, which can be uncomfortable both psychologically and for the eyes. When the swarm function is activated, APC20 detectors dim the lighting in unoccupied areas of the room to comfortable basic lighting that reduces contrasts in brightness. The lighting turns off completely only when the last person has left the office. Central functions for standardised override APC presence detectors control each lighting group in a DALI range individually using additional BMS presence detectors, enabling an override via a 230 V or DALI-2 push button. The new APC20 detectors also enable switching on and off across groups via a central function with adjustable luminous efficiency. For example, cleaning staff arriving in the early evening or morning may switch on the lights via the central push button and get to work immediately with all lighting at maximum illuminance in all areas. As with the APC10 presence detectors, the APC20 variants can also switch groups flexibly and be controlled based on the time of day and day of the week. Functions and parameters can be easily adjusted to suit different applications and variable scenarios. APC presence detectors from ESYLUX also feature an integrated bus voltage supply and 16A relay for switching off HVAC systems or additional lighting. The detectors are available with an overall field of detection of 8m, 24m or 32m in diameter and enable simple configuration of the entire system via smartphone. ESYLUX develops, produces and distributes intelligent automation and lighting solutions for a better quality of life and energy efficiency. Its customers and partners include wholesalers, installation companies, electrical and lighting planners and architects, who put their trust in more than 55 years of market experience.

Esylux Basic Express.

Esylux Basic Express offers simpler functionality

ESYLUX also launched presence and motion detectors from its new entry-level BASIC EXPRESS series at the Light + Building trade fair. The detectors can be installed in suspended ceilings without need for further accessories and used to switch lighting based on demand. Increasing energy efficiency and convenience in settings where simpler functionality is sufficient, their flush-mounted design ensures a discreet appearance. Simple movement and daylight- dependent switching of lighting help reduce energy costs and CO2 emissions. Easily installed without the need for accessories or cavity wall boxes, the housing features protection type IP23, integrated strain relief and pre-mounted clamping springs. During operation, zero-cross

switching protects the relay of the detector from inrush currents caused by electronic ballasts, while push button input enables semi-automatic operation as required. A total detection range of 8m in diameter can be easily expanded through the parallel wiring of multiple detectors. Through-wiring with double diaphragm cable entry for cables of up to 2.5sqmm

makes installation simpler. All detectors in the BASIC

EXPRESS series are immediately ready for use with factory settings and can be easily parameterised using either the optional REMOTE CONTROL MDi/PDi or the ESY- Pen and ESY-App.
