Let M y Heart Be Broken By Richard Gehrrum

M y Answer By Billy Graham

3.00 For several years Billy Graham has written a daily column for over 150 newspapers with the heading, “My Answer.” This book is a selection of the most significant of these questions arranged under twenty-seven cate gories, such as marriage, home, chil dren, teen-agers, loneliness, Chris tianity and Communism, and various aspects of doctrine. Since these are all problems that have been real to some readers and have prompted them to write in, they will be of in terest to a wide Christian public of readers of book materials. 259 pages; cloth; Doubleday & Co., Garden City, N.Y.; $3.50. Medical missions is one of the most effective aspects of any foreign mis sion agency, and has been demon strated in recent Congo turmoil, one of the most tenacious and valued by the natives. This book is the thrilling account of a missionary nurse who worked for twelve years in the area “ just under the lower fringes of the Sahara Desert.” The work was under the Sudan Interior Mission. The au thor has lived in Africa since 1922 and recounts many of the changes that have taken place. The book is thrilling reading from many stand points. 319 pages; cloth; Moody Press, Chicago; $3.75. The title is ambiguous, but the subtitle indicates the contents of this valuable compendium of t e x t s : “ Selected Source Material for the Study of the History of the Early Church, the New Testament Books, [and] the New Testament Canon.” Over a hundred passages from the writings of some of the fathers and others of the subapostolic era are in cluded here in their original Latin and Greek with English translations. Jewish, Gentile, and Christian sources present references to the various books of the New Testament, introductory headings, correspondence, and canoni cal lists. Although a technical work, this is a basic book for any student of the Bible and of Christianity, and with its appendices and indexes a use ful tool, xiv, 135 pages; cloth; Baker Book House, Grand Rapids; $3.95. Splinter* from an African Log By Martha Wall Evidence of Tradition By Daniel J. Theron

One of the most vigorous and effec tive mission agencies of recent de velopment is World Vision, Inc., with Dr. Bob Pierce as its founder and leader. This book tells the story of this work in the Orient. Homes for orphans and lepers, and schools for refugee children are among the most basic elements of the program. Con ferences for native pastors bring much encouragement to discouraged laborers. The story is told by a pro fessional writer and the book is illus trated with several pages of photo graphs. 245 pages; cloth; McGraw- Hill Book Company, New York; $4.95. The sequence of thought as re vealed by the subtitle of this book re veals the purpose of the author in writing it — “ knowing, loving, and serving our Lord Jesus Christ.” Know ing Christ, instead of about Him, and basing service upon the personal relation with Christ brought about by salvation, are the emphases devel oped in the book. One interesting chapter uses ‘four transes’ of Paul — transformation, transfusion, transmis sion, translation. The last word here has its doctrinal meaning. A prayer ful reading of the book will enrich and strengthen the spiritual life of any Christian, we believe. 205 pages; cloth; Zondervan Publishing House, Grand Rapids; $3.00. A layman himself, a Gideon, and a banker, the author summarizes in simple language a number of the im portant teachings of the Bible as found in both the Old and New Testa ments. While doctrine is plainly dealt with, it is not in a cold or isolated manner; rather the Biblical events and the Christian life are the matrix and goal of each discussion. A strong defense of the faith, as well as the proclamation of it, are evident. Experiences from contemporary life are used to illustrate the points set forth. As one would suppose, the last chapter argues strongly for a wit nessing program for the layman,— “ there is no ‘closed season’ with it Going Deeper By J.
