Scholastic and Valley of Sun United Way have teamed up to create School Readiness Kits for children ages three to five. They have everything that families need to get school-ready in one easy-to-use package! Prepare Every Child for Kindergarten and Beyond!
Each kit contains three books, a detailed guide to a child’s development milestones, 80+ super-fun activities, and more. Completely bilingual in English and Spanish , these research-based kits make it easy and fun for families to incorporate learning into their daily routines.

The City of Phoenix Birth to Five program introduces the School Readiness Kits as part of its transition plan at 30 months. Our family advocates will distribute the kit during a home visit and incorporate materials to plan experiences around the parents’ interests and child’s abilities. Get the Most Out of Your School Readiness Kits
School Readiness Kits are a great way to engage with your families and encourage learning and reading together, ensuring that every child is ready for kindergarten. Here are some opportunities to distribute kits to the families in your community: • New student enrollment events • Kindergarten roundups or registrations • PreK family nights • School tours • Family meet and greets • End of the school year events • PTA/PTO outreach events • PreK graduations • Family conferences and/or home visits • Beginning of school year and/or back-to-school events • Winter/summer break events • School readiness drives Partner with community literacy advocates and organizations to extend your reach and distribute even more kits. • Public libraries • Community centers and organizations • Faith-based organizations
• Women, infant, and children (WIC) agencies • Local doctor’s offices for three- and four- year-old wellness visits • Food-service programs such as local food pantries

Establishing Healthy Routines
• KNOW OUR HELPERS Explain the roles of firefighters, police, and emergency medical workers and the ways they help us during emergencies.
Good Clean Habits • IN THE BATHROOM Practice washing hands after going to the bathroom. Sing with your child to make it fun. “This is the way we wash our hands, wash our hands, wash our hands…” • BRUSH YOUR TEETH Have your child brush for two minutes every morning and before bedtime. Teach your child how to put toothpaste on the toothbrush and how to rinse the brush at the end. • KEEP YOUR BODY CLEAN Show your child how to use soap and a washcloth to clean their body. Staying Safe • CROSS SAFELY Explain how crosswalk signs work and the importance of looking both ways before crossing a street. “When you see the picture of a person walking, then it’s usually safe to go. Always check with a grown-up first.” • PLAY SAFELY Talk with your child about being safe while playing around others. Explain about not walking in front of a child on a swing and not getting too close to games with bats and balls. • TELL AN ADULT Teach your child that it’s okay to say “no” to touches or situations that make them feel uncomfortable or scared.

• Make half your plate fruits and vegetables. • Make at least half your grains whole. • Switch to skim or 1% milk. • Vary your protein food choices.

Ask, “Which one has more water in it now?” Experimenting With Adding and Subtracting • NUMBER STORIES Use stuffed animals, play figures, and songs to act out addition and subtraction stories, such as “One potato, two potato, three potato, four.” • ADD AND TAKE AWAY Collect toys or small-size snacks, such as crackers or cereal pieces. Make a group of two. Count them aloud with your child. “Let’s add another. Now how many do we have?” Try adding and taking away amounts up to five and then up to ten. Sorting and Grouping Objects • SORT THE LAUNDRY Lay out clean laundry you are folding. Ask your child to find all the socks. Then have your child sort them by color. “How many of each color do we have?” Continue with shirts, towels, or other items. • IN THE DRAWER Take all of the small items out of a kitchen drawer and help your child sort them into groups. How many different groups can you make?
Counting Out Loud; Counting Objects • COUNT ALL DAY LONG Make a point of counting objects to ten throughout your day. Count food items as you put them into your grocery cart; count socks when you are doing laundry; count your child’s fingers and toes at bathtime. Recognizing Numbers • FIND NUMBERS ALL AROUND Point out number symbols when you go places. For example, at the pet store, say, “The numbers tell us how much the dog food costs.” • WRITE NUMBERS Practice writing 1 to 10. Help your child write numbers in sand or on a cookie sheet covered with flour or salt. Comparing Numbers and Quantities • PLAY A NUMBER GAME Use raisins, crackers, or another snack to play this game. Place one snack piece in front of your child and one in front of you. Give your child a second piece. “Who
