HAPPY SEMIQUINCENTENNIAL
America the beautiful, the land that we love has a special birthday in 2026. Although she’s sometimes a little bruised and banged up, she will elegantly turn 250 years old on July 4, 2026: a semiquincentennial birthday. It was more than 250 years ago when it all began when in 1620, Pilgrims, seeking religious freedom, boarded ships and landed in the New World, establishing the Plymouth Colony. The early years were marked by hardship, but the colony flourished and became a model for future colonies, influencing American governance and society. Throughout the 17th and early 18th centuries, 13 colonies were established. By the mid-18th century, the British Crown officially recognized the colonies. But the British had already made inroads in the New World. As early as 1585, England began colonizing the Americas and numerous permanent English settlements were made. It became clear that although the British Crown had officially recognized the new colonies, the British sought to control them. This all came to a head during the American Revolutionary War. A war that when referred to as the American War of Independence, hits the nail on the head. The young colonies wanted independence from the stronghold of the British. George Washington and the Continental Army’s decisive victory in the Siege of Yorktown in 1781 led King George III to negotiate an end to the war in the Treaty of Paris in 1783, in which the British monarchy acknowledged the independence of the Thirteen
Colonies, leading to the establishment of the United States as an independent and sovereign nation. But nothing really changed. Britain continued meddling and the colonists found it necessary to continue to assert independence. Fortunately, there were a few brave men who had had enough and acted. In Philadelphia, on June 7, 1776, Richard Henry Lee of Virginia (I’m proud of my outspoken ancestors) introduced a resolution for independence to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia; John Adams seconded the motion. A committee consisting of Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert R. Livington was promptly chosen on June 11 to prepare a statement justifying the decision to assert independence. This was only the beginning. The Declaration of Independence was approved by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, and that announced the separation of the 13 North American colonies from Great Britain. Then Congress on July 2 “unanimously”, by the votes of 12 colonies (with New York abstaining), resolved that “these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be Free and Independent States.” Accordingly, the day on which final separation was officially voted was July 2, although the 4th, the day on which the Declaration of Independence was adopted, has always been celebrated in the United States as the great national holiday—the Fourth of July or Independence Day.

COAST TO COAST DIRECTORY 2026
It comes in many names — Semiquincentennial, Sestercentennial, Quarter Millennial, the Big Two- Five-Oh—but they all refer to the same thing: 250 years since that historic Fourth of July moment in 1776, exactly two-and-a-half centuries since America’s birth, when the Founding Fathers declared independence right in the heart of Philadelphia. In 1776, newly minted Americans threw a giant party to commemorate the day. Fireworks, bonfires, lights, decorations, music and joyful gatherings filled the streets of Philadelphia. “American Independence was celebrated here with a festivity and ceremony becoming the occasion,” recalled Founding Father John Adams. And now 250 momentous years later, from sea to shining sea, Americans from the tip of Florida to the Alaskan archipelago will be gearing up to celebrate this milestone birthday. But as many already know, there’s no better place to celebrate America than in its birthplace: Philadelphia. Here are just a few of the things Philadelphia, Pennsylvania has planned to make this a special celebration. Bells Across PA: The designs will be informed by community stakeholders and will reflect each neighborhood’s unique identity, while also celebrating and commemorating the semiquincentennial. Once completed, the bells will be displayed along commercial corridors and public parks creating a treasure. Both the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps are honoring the same milestone in Philadelphia, the city where both services were born. The Navy’s anniversary took place October 9-16, 2025, followed by the Marine Corps on November 10, 2025.
What could be better than an exhibition of America’s favorite pastime. The 2026 Major League Baseball All-Star Game and All-Star Week will be played in Philadelphia, mid-July 2026. As part of the Fifa World Cup 2026, Philly will host 6 matches between Jun 14-July 2, 2026. This is the largest sporting event in the World. In 2017, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) announced a grant of $380,000 to the city of Philadelphia to plant 76 semiquincentennial commemorative trees at Independence National Historical Park. The actual planting of the trees has been happening over the course of the past several years, leading up to the semiquincentennial. to issue commemorative coins and postage stamps, and commission appropriately named naval vessels. The legislation specifically directs the organization of events “in locations of historical significance to the United States” going on to list Boston, Philadelphia, New York City, and Charleston, South Carolina, as “leading cities.” The United States Semiquincentennial Commission Act of 2016 directs the United States Government The Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 allows the United States Mint to redesign any coins in 2026. It calls for a series of five designs for the quarter, including one depicting women’s contribution to independence. Plans for the casting of a new public bell are being coordinated by the National Bell Festival. The bell will honor 250 years of women’s contributions to the American story and will lead nationwide ringing tributes during the celebrations.

HAPPY SEMIQUINCENTENNIAL Washington, D.C . The nation’s capital is the icing on the birthday cake. The National Mall will be center stage for celebrations, a year-long event hosted by the National Park Service, Smithsonian, and the National Archives. Expect fireworks, a parade, a two-day celebration on Pennsylvania Avenue, and an entire month-long festival on the National Mall. The National Archives in D.C. is the only place to see the Declaration of Independence. In an unusual turn, it has been announced that President Donald Trump and CEO Dana White, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), have planned a UFC fight right outside the White House. The event will take place earlier in June, due to the high volume of events happening around July 4. In South Carolina , the state’s 250th commission plans to share history “from all points of view,” including “the beauty and the warts and the terror of it all.” The Nebraska 250th commission will “promote under-represented groups from the American Revolutionary War, including, but not limited to, women, Native Americans, and persons of color.” For the 250th Evacuation Day celebrations, which commemorates the evacuation of British forces from the city of Boston, Massachusetts following the siege of Boston, on March 17, 2026, the NPS will carry out a $25 million overhaul of the Dorchester Heights Monument. In honor of George Washington’s troop’s final leg of the trip to secretly haul cannons to the Fortification of Dorchester Heights, artist Michael Dowling seeks 100,000 Bostonians to write “a short story of belonging” on any piece of cloth, which will be tied in a 4-mile long rope, the same length as the covert journey. Charleston, South Carolina , has begun planning battle reenactments and anniversary festivities. These parallel the 2020 celebrations of the College of Charleston’s 250th anniversary, as well as the 350th anniversary of the city of Charleston, which was called Charles Town during the Revolutionary War. Louisville, Kentucky , headquarters of The Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), announced plans to develop a SAR Education Center and Museum to be opened prior to the 250th Anniversary, which will house galleries and exhibits will highlight the patriot ancestors and tell the story of the American Revolution.
musical celebrations with the Pittsburgh Orchestra, and a major fireworks display at Fort Pitt and an all- day parade through all city neighborhoods.
In 2026, Denver, Colorado , will also observe the 150th anniversary of Colorado entering the Union.
In 2026, the San Francisco Bay Area, California will also observe the 250th anniversary of the founding of San Francisco, as well as the 175th anniversary of Santa Clara University. Several events will be held in honor of the Bay Area’s celebrations, beginning with Super Bowl LX, February 8, 2026. Richmond, Virginia : The 250th anniversary of Patrick Henry’s famous “Give me liberty or give me death!” speech in 1775 will be marked this year by filmmaker Ken Burns in a reenactment ceremony on March 23 in Richmond. “It marks the 250th anniversary—a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the speech in the same church, on the same day, and same time it was delivered. And the Historic Triangle ( Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown, Virginia ) is known as the birthplace of America. In summer 2026, the largest living history museum, Colonial Williamsburg, will have a grand display of live reenactments and a Lights of Freedom concert with fireworks. The party’s also starting early in Concord and Lexington, Massachusetts . That’s because 2025 marks the beginning of the American Revolution. On April 19, Patriot’s Day, activities will include reenactments at Concord’s Minute Man National Historical Park and Lexington’s Battle Green. From the famous midnight ride of Paul Revere to the very first battle of the war, Massachusetts was a host for several key happenings during America’s fight for independence. These include Battles of Lexington and Concord, Battle of Bunker Hill, and Battle of Gloucester. The 2026 re-enactment in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania , is set for July 3 through 5 at the Daniel Lady Farm. “As for historic taverns, one of the most popular places to dine in Gettysburg, Dobbin House Tavern, is as old as this country and will also be celebrating its 250th in 2026.” The New York Historical on Central Park West will debut its Democracy Wing in 2026. And in spring 2026, The New York Public Library, a steward of important founding documents, will host a system- wide initiative.
In 2019, the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania , will feature a Freedom train with Black and Gold colors,

The U.S. Navy will also host the seventh International Fleet Review in New York Harbor on July 4, 2026, which will incorporate OpSail 2026. It is expected that 60 ships from 30 countries will take part. Sail250® is a global gathering of tall ships and military ships to celebrate the semiquincentennial. New York will celebrate at the Port of New York and New Jersey on July 4. New Orleans Sail250 will take place at the Port of New Orleans and Norfolk will serve as the host city in Virginia. Branson, Missouri , has flagged the country’s birthday with a hopeful designation as having the most American flags in one destination. Branson plans to purchase enough American flags for every household in the destination to hang and have the Guinness Book of World Records available to make it an official record. New Mexico: Next year, visitors can be among the first to celebrate 100 years of cruising America’s Mother Road, Route 66, in the state that boasts the most iconic stretch (450 miles) of the historic highway. All these and more events will celebrate the semiquincentennial (250th anniversary) of the United States. Check with your local city and state as more events are added, so you can celebrate, too.
To commemorate the 250th anniversary in 2026, consider these celebration ideas:
Organize a historical exhibition showcasing significant events from the past 250 years.
Host a community festival featuring local artists, musicians, and food vendors.
Create a time capsule to be opened on the 300th anniversary.
Launch educational programs in schools about the history and impact of the past 250 years.
Develop a commemorative publication or documentary highlighting key milestones.
Encourage public art installations that reflect the community’s heritage and future vision.
