A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEADTEACHER

KEY SCHOOL DATES

This time last week a group of our musicians were making their way to Lodi in Italy to take part in a Youth Orchestra made up of students from a number of twinned towns across Europe. As ever Mrs O’Brien and Ms Lewis ensured that this was an inspirational weekend for the students, who not only grew as performers, but also gained a

wonderful insight into Italian life and culture. The students were representing Richmond and we could not have asked for better ambassadors. Next year the Youth Orchestra will be coming to Richmond to celebrate the reaffirmation of the twinning so we can all look forward to enjoying a beautiful performance on our doorstep. This week Mrs Clarke and Mr Page took a group of Year 9 students to 4 of our local primary schools to lead a drama workshop. Students in Year 1 at Archdeacon, Twickenham Primary, Stanley and Trafalgar were treated to a performance of Beware of the Storybook Wolves. Our Year 9 Duke of Edinburgh participants had their training days for the upcoming expeditions after half term. They really enjoyed learning new skills, unsurprisingly in an age of Sat Navs, they found the map reading really challenging, but this will definitely prove useful. Yesterday Professor Jon Davis OBE, Director of the Strand Group at King’s College London spoke to our sixth form students. Before joining King’s, Professor Davis was Director of the Mile End Group at Queen Mary, University of London. His major project partnerships included those with No. 10 Downing Street and HM Treasury. His research focuses on the contemporary history of the British central government. In an election year students were fascinated to hear his insights into our political system.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 10

This week as the GCSE and A Level exams got underway Year 10 continued to work on their studies. This week we had an assembly with Ms Lane on Mental Health Awareness week linking in with the wonderful skills and attributes that athletes have shown in the Invictus Games. We also held the successful House Captain applicants competition and we launched our new Prefect system to students and staff. All students who have become prefects should have collected their prefect badges and cards and have spoken to the head of the department to which they have been allocated. The member of staff will then tell them when and where they need to attend and how to achieve our two special awards of enjoy and empower. For more information students should look on their tutor google classrooms. 10 of our wonderful students have been representing Richmond in Milan since last Thursday as part of a European Youth Orchestra. The students in Year 10 include; Matilda V, Freya DS, Lily DS, Elodie W, Eleanor O, Emily C. Well done to all who participated, I hope you had a lovely time! This Friday we have a trip going out to Paris with some of our Year 10 GCSE students going out to soak up the sights and sounds of France. I can’t wait to hear all about your adventures when you return next week. Next week is our final week of the half term and all students will have had a chance to look over the Year 10 Exam content that has been posted on tutor google classes and have spoken to their subject teachers. We will also focus on developing a revision timetable in tutor time for the students to use over half term. All students should have now finalised their work experience placements and submitted all the paperwork required. If you have any questions please contact Ms Croucher ASAP.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

Turtles all the way down by John Green. Turtles all the way down follows the 16 year old character Aza Holmes as she struggles with OCD and anxiety. However, she embarks on a journey to find out the mysterious absence of her ex million best friend’s father, despite the dangers involved within this. I found this book really intriguing as it gives you a first hand perspective on the experiences that people struggling and persevering with mental illnesses face. It also delves into the strong connections of friendships and how they shape you to be the person you are today. ~ Recommended by Yasemin A, 11ERU
