Creating a Little Extra Happiness What My Hobbies Mean to Me

January 2020

January has been deemed National Hobby Month, and I think this gives everyone a great opportunity to indulge in the hobbies that make them happy and to really take a moment to appreciate what these activities do for us. One lifelong hobby I have is fishing. More specifically, deep-sea fishing off the Jersey Shore. I’ll never forget my first time: At just 4 years old, my father, grandfather, and all my uncles hauled me onto a big, rickety boat in the middle of a storm. The trip had been planned for weeks, so they weren’t about to let a little rain change things. But it was more than a little rain, and it should have been a terrifying experience for a 4-year-old. Instead, I remember it as one of the most thrilling moments of my life. I don’t know if it was the fact that we were fighting a storm, that we managed to catch a cooler full of sea bass, or that I was finally “one of the boys” fishing on the open ocean, but that trip draws me back to the Atlantic every summer. Fishing has turned into an exciting competition among all of us now, but the stories of time spent with family are ones we always regale. Plus, you can’t beat the relaxation. I’ve always said that if I ever retire (which I also say I’ll never do), I’ll run a bait shop on the shore and spend the rest of my days fishing and selling bait to kindred spirits. Hey, a guy can dream. A second hobby I’ve come to immensely enjoy is collecting relics from the RevolutionaryWar. I grew up in Philadelphia and have always been a huge history buff, especially when it comes to American wars. Now that my daughter is attending school in Boston, whenever I visit her, I’m always reinstilled with a love of history because that area has so much to experience. About six months ago, amid one of these trips, I was hit with the itch to start finding a way to connect

further with the history of our country. I could think of no better way than to collect items from the birth of our beginnings.

The first piece I collected was an old wooden canteen with so much character that I can picture the solider who clutched it as he drank. Since then, I’ve collected some continental currency, a few old game dice with the Stamp Act crown emblazoned on them, bullets and bullet molds, and more. But my favorite find so far is a newspaper that was printed in 1776 in Philadelphia. Wading through all the stories that detail the events occurring during that time is like stepping into the past, and it’s an incredible find that fills me with pride and appreciation every time I leaf through it. There’s something about hobbies that give our lives a little bit of extra meaning. They’re a great way to unwind from the responsibilities thrust upon us, and they instill a happiness you just can’t find anywhere else. Sometimes, it’s important to take a step away and indulge in something new so you can gain perspective and appreciation in other facets of your life. So, whether you have old hobbies or new hobbies, I hope you find some extra time this month to enjoy them.

Tips for National Clean Up Your Computer Month Ctrl, Alt, Delete Your Clutter

Everyone relies on technology. Computers, laptops, tablets, and phones are staples of modern life. However, it’s easy for these devices to become cluttered with old photos, files, and general disorganization. Luckily, January is National Clean Up Your Computer Month and an excellent time to get your technology in order. START BY DUSTING Over time, computer towers can become clogged with dust, which creates additional, unwanted heat within your computer. Regular cleanings will increase the lifespan of your computer and protect its essential components. Compressed air is great for removing most of the dust and other particulates. If the fans or filters are too dirty, you can remove them from the tower to clean them better. If you use water or liquid cleaning products on them, be sure they are completely dry before placing them back into your computer. ORGANIZE YOUR FILES Naming and arranging the files on your computer in such a way that they’re easy

for you to find can end up saving you a lot of time. Declutter your workspace by creating one file for pictures, one for Word documents, one for spreadsheets, and one for programs to eliminate the hassle of frantically searching for the files you need. BACK UP YOUR COMPUTER Be sure to back up your computer before you start deleting things. This acts as a safety net in case you delete something you didn’t mean to. Additionally, consider installing a second hard drive. The extra space can help with storing important files without having to worry about how much room is left. CLEAN UP SPACE Any files you’ll never use again should be deleted. Likewise, any programs you haven’t used in a while should be uninstalled. Check your hard drive for files that might be taking up unintended space on your computer. And remember to empty the recycling bin — it’s easy to forget just how much goes in there.

Debunking Dental Myths

What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You

THE MYTH: Primary teeth don’t matter because they’re not permanent.

Proper oral hygiene regimens can be tricky to follow because there’s so much unreliable information floating around and certain important practices have never been widely addressed. Here are four common misconceptions about oral health and how best to tackle them.

THE FACTS: Primary, or “baby,” teeth play an important role in the early development of the mouth. They guide the permanent teeth in the proper direction, and their health can also affect those teeth. Without proper care of the primary teeth, a child’s permanent teeth may not develop properly, which can influence nutrition and speech development.

THE MYTH: Brushing harder will make your teeth cleaner.

THE FACTS: Brushing too hard or with a toothbrush that’s too abrasive can actually cause your teeth harm because it erodes some of the enamel that protects your teeth from decay. The first step in safe brushing is to use a soft-bristled brush.

THE MYTH: Sugar causes cavities.

THE FACTS: For a long time, people have believed that sugar is the primary cause of tooth decay. It does play a significant role in the formation of cavities, but bacteria primarily like to feed on carbohydrates to produce the acids that attack enamel. This means crackers and bread may be more dangerous to your oral health than candy. If you have any questions about your oral health and the best way to manage it, always let the professionals answer them. That’s what Fabey Dental Studios is here for.

THE MYTH: Your teeth have to be white to be healthy.

THE FACTS: Teeth are naturally white, and there are many unhealthy things that can cause them to grow darker, like smoking. But there are also many natural things that can cause them to darken, like stains from food and drinks, certain medications, and aging. Just because your teeth aren’t as white as they once were doesn’t mean they’re unhealthy.

Meet the World’s First Airport Therapy Pig How Lilou and Animals Like Her Calm Stressed-Out Travelers Imagine you’re navigating a vast airport on a busy Saturday, shouldering your way through crowds and struggling to hear the PA system over the clatter of 1,000 wheeled suitcases. Suddenly, you see a pig wearing a hot pink sweater waddling toward you on a leash. Do you stop in your tracks? Does your stress level drop? Do you laugh out loud when you see its pink nail polish? If you answered “yes” to any of the above, then you can sympathize with the passengers, pilots, flight attendants, and staff at the San Francisco International Airport. They get to enjoy visits from Lilou, the world’s first airport therapy pig, on a regular basis! As part of the Wag Brigade, the airport’s cadre of (mostly canine) therapy animals, Lilou wanders the airport with her humans, bringing joy, peace, and calm to everyone she meets. Lilou may be the only pig of her kind, but airport therapy animals have been a growing trend for the last few years. According to NPR, as of 2017, more than 30 airports across the U.S. employed therapy dogs, and these days, estimates land closer to 60. The San Jose and Denver airports have therapy cats, and the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport even offers passengers the chance to play with miniature horses before boarding their flights. Therapy dogs started appearing in U.S. airports after the 9/11 terror attacks, which changed American attitudes about flying. They did so well at helping passengers calm down that airports began implementing permanent programs. Some have pets on hand 24/7 to assist passengers, while others host animal visits every fewweeks or months. These days, regular travelers have fallen hard for their local therapy animals, many of whom even have their own Instagram accounts and hashtags. So, the next time you’re traveling, keep an eye out for a friendly pup, cat, pig, or horse to pet. A bit of love from an animal just might improve your trip!

Experience the History of Philadelphia Take a Trip to My Hometown Philadelphia is rich with fascinating history and wonderful stories about how our country came to be. Growing up there turned me into the history buff I am today, so I can’t help but urge everyone to take at least one trip to the city and experience the Historic District’s incredible past. History buffs and casual vacationers alike will find something to marvel at, like a few of these favorites.

THE LIBERTY BELL One of the most iconic symbols of U.S. history, the Liberty Bell resides permanently on Independence Mall. At a whopping 2,080 pounds, it was originally brought to Philadelphia in 1752, where it cracked and was recast by John Pass and John Stow, whose names are emblazoned on it. It was usually rung to summon legislative sessions, but its most famous chime occurred on July 8, 1776, to announce the reading of the Declaration of Independence. You can learn all about its exciting role in history in much more detail at the accompanying Liberty Bell Center. ELFRETH’S ALLEY Named for blacksmith and property owner Jeremiah Elfreth, this alley is the nation’s oldest continuously inhabited residential street. Stepping into Elfreth’s Alley is truly like stepping back in time. Once home to

18th-century artisans, merchants, and tradespeople who formed the backbone of colonial Philadelphia, this street still houses residents in 32 homes. The original cobblestone streets and red brick exteriors portray the personality of our early nation, and two structures adjacent to the alley are informative museums open to the public. MUSEUM OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION One of my personal favorites and the inspiration for starting my own collection of RevolutionaryWar memorabilia, this museum displays the evolution of the American colonies from their humble beginnings to their improbable victory during the war that allowed the creation of a new nation. There are countless artifacts on display, like General Washington’s headquarters tent, the personal diaries of soldiers, and military weapons. Wandering the museum’s exhibits is a true history fanatic’s dream.
