4.1 OVERVIEW OF THE EUROPEAN AGRICULTURE INDUSTRY
The overall gross value add 47 of the European ( EU-27 48 ) agriculture industry reached €184 billion in 2021 (see Figure 21). 49 This represents 1.4 percent of total European gross value add, a figure that has remained relatively stable for the past decade. In comparison, the U.S. agriculture industry gross value add accounted for $250 billion (approximately €244 billion) in 2021, or 1.1 percent of the total U.S. gross value add. 50
The European agriculture industry’s gross value add is highly concentrated among a handful of countries. The top five countries, namely France, Italy, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands, account for around 70 percent of total EU agriculture gross value add. This has been the case throughout the past decade. In that time, Spain, the Netherlands and France have been the largest contributors to growth in gross value add, growing at annual rates of 3 percent, 2 percent and 2 percent, respectively.
