When measured in value of production, specialty crops are the largest crop type in Europe, accounting for approximately 40 percent of total 2021 European production value (or €90 billion). The next largest are cereals (28 percent of total production value) and wheat and spelt (14 percent) (see Figure 22). 51 When measured in tons 52 of production, however, broad acre productions take over, with cereals (40 percent) and wheat and spelt (19 percent) representing
the largest production categories in Europe in 2021. Specialty crop production accounted for 17 percent, while maize (including grain and corn) represented 10 percent. Within specialty crops, grapes are the most produced crop in Europe by weight, representing 18 percent of total 2021 specialty crop production. Tomatoes (14 percent), olives (10 percent) and apples (9 percent) are the next three most-produced specialty crops by weight.
