2022 SPECIALTY CROP AUTOMATION REPORT

Specialty crop production in Europe has been stagnant since 2011, growing at an annual rate of only 0.4 percent (see Figure 23). 53 This trend can also be found in data from 2000 onwards. As with the gross value add of the agriculture industry, specialty crop production is highly concentrated in just a few countries. Italy, Spain, France and Poland account for almost 70 percent of specialty crop production when measured in tons of produce.

In 2021, the top six specialty crops accounted for approximately 65 percent of total production volume in Europe, a level that has remained relatively stable over the past decade. Onions (2 percent annual growth rate since 2011), tomatoes (1 percent) and apples (1 percent) have driven the overall growth in production, while olives (-1 percent) and grapes (-0.4 percent) have slowed it down.
