2022 SPECIALTY CROP AUTOMATION REPORT

A similar picture can be observed in fruit production. Poland has notably increased its apple production, for example, as it has continued to invest in better equip- ment and infrastructure to leverage the country’s ide- al conditions for the fruit (see Figure 28). Meanwhile, production of apples and grapes in France has declined, again because of relatively expensive labor. Greece has

increased its strawberry production after switching from Camarosa strawberries to Victory strawberries. The latter type has a longer shelf life and offers greater profits to producers, who have therefore continued to invest in the region. Spain is the only country in Europe to increase its grape production to any notable degree, again due to best-in-class water management and crop health practices. 59

TURKEY HAS SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASED ITS FRUIT AND NUT PRODUCTION, WITH FRANCE IN PARTICULAR HAS CUT BACK
