Dear Friends and Colleagues: USGBC NJ is pleased to announce that we have been awarded an Impact Grant by USGBC National. This grant will support the Chapter’s ongoing ef- forts to perform a New Jersey based study, which will result in Green School Master Plans and guidance for schools in the areas of facilities, governance and policy, as well as sustainability curriculum consistent with USGBC’s Cen- ter for Green Schools. This work will build upon past projects and collective experiences of USGBC NJ, NJ School Boards Association (NJSBA), Sustainable Jersey, Green Rib- bon Schools, and various subject matter experts and organizations to impact

all aspects of school district planning and execution. The grant funds will be utilized to support and match administrative/management costs, educational costs and subject matter expert fees, for a 2 school pilot study representing a limited cross section of NJ Schools with expanded rep- resentation in follow up studies. The representative schools are in the selection process. This project also interfaces with NJ State Government in that many of the LEED® and Sustain- ability courses that USGBC NJ has developed to adapt to school boards and facilities staff have been accepted by NJ Buildings and Grounds Association as qualifying for the Professional De- velopment Credit requirements mandated by Governor Christie. (The requirement is 20 CEU’s over 3 years). The results of this study will also provide data that supports the multifaceted value of green buildings and LEED that is requested by our NJ legislators. The urgent need for healthy and safe schools, combined with the need to lower operational costs, has positioned this initiative to positively impact the greening of the NJ Schools portfolio. Working with our partners (NJ SBA, Sustainable Jersey), USGBC NJ will deliver technical exper- tise and resources, providing tools and guidance to acquire building operational baseline data, and to work with the schools’ management and staff to create short and long-term Master Plans leading to achievable timelines. The processes and measureable outcomes of this pilot study will be published on an on-line platform, be incorporated into an instructional video, and will also be available as downloadable documents. This data will be accessible to all USGBC Chapters, NJ School Boards Association, and Sustainable Jersey, as well as all board members and staff of the 586 NJ School Districts. Florence Block, LEED Green Associate Executive Director, USGBC-NJ
