SUMMER 2024

Update From Our Executive Director

Callanwolde in the News The media has covered so much of the incredible work we are doing for underserved communities at Callanwolde that I thought I ’ d share some of the highlights . At the end of last summer , Callanwolde hosted 50 children from Cedar Grove Elementary , a Title I school in south DeKalb , for a week of Art Scholars Camp . Atlanta News First interviewed two students , the principal , and yours truly , regarding the amazing impact the camp had on all the kids . Atlanta News First was back again during last year ’ s Winter House , featuring Finance Director , Chelsea Walker , and her kids , enjoying a stress - free experience with our very own Sensory Santa ( a . k . a ., Steve Cole ).

Painting by Callanwolde Instructor , Pat Hobaugh .

The Atlanta Journal Constitution featured a very moving interview with Air Force Veteran and jewelry making student , Rhonda Lawson .

Our partnership with the ESOL program at Lakeside High School also caught the AJC ’ s attention with an article entitled , “ An Opportunity to be a ‘ Regular Teenager ’”. On April 10th of this year , the AJC announced the public phase of Callanwolde ’ s capital campaign . Two new buildings will be added to the campus to keep up with the growth of enrollments . A new Pottery Building , adjacent to the kiln yard , will accommodate 98 more students . The Mr . and Mrs . William C . Warren III Flex Arts Building will include three dance studios and two painting and drawing studios .

POTTERY ON THE WHEEL - INTERMEDIATE LEVEL 1

BOTTLE WORKSHOP WITH RICK BERMAN

LUSTER WORKSHOP

Participants should bring 5 - 10 pieces of work previously glaze fired in electric or gas kilns .( no salt or soda or raku ). Lusters are applied on top of glaze fired work . Gold , white gold ( silver ), copper , platinum , and mother of pearl lusters will be available for use . If you want Luster decals you can buy them from Davens or theceramicshop . com . Make sure they are LUSTER decals , not underglaze decals . The finished pieces will be available for pickup the next day after noon . Masks or respirators are recommended if sensitive to fumes .

The bottle form seems to appear in every culture in the world , ie . India , China , the Americas , Egypt , the Near East , Japan , Korea , Africa , Tibet , all over Europe , and on and on and on for thousands of years . The form was used in so many ways including the most obvious which were gathering water from the well or river , fermenting wine or beer , transporting liquids for trade , and whatever else was necessary according to the times and the culture . Also the bottle seems to be one of the most difficult forms to make on the potter ' s wheel so we will discuss at length , the challenge of the technique , and the pure joy of making a beautiful bottle . This workshop is recommended for Intermediate / Advanced students . In 1973 , Rick received an MFA in ceramics , from the University of Georgia . He was the founder and director of the ceramics department and Callanwolde Arts Center 1973 - 1980 . His work is in international and national collections , and has written numerous ceramics articles for Clay Times and Ceramics Monthly . Currently , Rick is teaching clay classes and workshops throughout the South East .

Intermediate Level wheel classes will explore advanced forms or a series of work . Examples of projects may include pottery sets ( mugs , tea bowls , etc ), large vases

and bottles , and other altered forms . Prerequisite - Beginner Level 2 Wheel .

In this hands - on workshop students learn to decorate and fire using westernized raku methods using combustible materials to create striking glaze results that vary depending on the way the flames and oxygen react to create vibrant colors and / or crackle effects . We also will do one special firing using aluminum sagger techniques providing earthtones and similar results to pit - firing . - Raku firing is low fire , and will not be water tight . Pots should be for decorative , non - food uses . Sculptures and decorative pottery forms are best , but any bisque fired pieces will work . - Bring a meal for our thirty minute lunch break . - Bring 5 - 7 small to midsize pieces or 2 - 3 large pieces to fire . - All work must be bisque fired prior to the workshop . - Handmade bisqueware will be available to purchase for students to use if they don ' t have enough of their own work to fire . - For safety and comfort , wear natural fibers clothing and closed toe shoes . No synthetic clothing or open toe shoes and sandals . Flame , water , and soot will likely create a dirty and smoky experience , so wear clothing that you will not mind getting dirty and possibly stained
