Connecting with FMB members
In recent weeks, Scotland Director Gordon Nelson has been out meeting FMB members to learn more about their businesses and the work they deliver. John Lasman of Alloa-based Lasman Industries took Gordon to Clackmannan Tolbooth. Built in 1592, the tolbooth needed sympathetic refurbishment, with Lasman Industries restoring and refurbishing this ancient building. Separately, Peter McBean and some of the team at PJM Joinery & Building showed Gordon around a boathouse and a luxury lakeside bothy that they are building for a private client in East Lothian. Gordon also met with members in Glasgow including Adnan and Dawn from Aplus Design & Construction, the team at WMR Contractors, and a new director at Decorous Ltd. If you would like to host Gordon at a site visit in Scotland please reach out to Gordon using the details below.

What’s been happening in Holyrood?
Scotland Bill. At its early stages in the Scottish Parliament, the bill focuses on economic development to help ensure economic wealth is generated, circulated and retained in local communities. Key ambitions of the bill are: ● higher levels of spend with SMEs and microbusinesses; ● inclusive business models resulting in business growth; and
● improved, resilient local and regional economies.
In the spring, Scotland Director Gordon Nelson met two Labour MSPs in the Scottish Parliament who sought out the FMB’s views on skills and training challenges in the construction sector. Colin Smyth MSP, the Convener of the Economy and Fair Work Committee, and Daniel Johnson MSP hosted Gordon at Holyrood. Of potential benefit to FMB members is the Community Wealth Building
Gordon will be keeping an eye on how the bill progresses through parliament. Gordon said “I’ve long argued for public sector procurement to be more friendly to small and micro businesses. Those members already delivering construction services for public sector clients would stand to gain, but I’d expect the final bill to make it easier for more FMB members to bid for and win work from the public sector.”
