Perhaps one of the easiest sales he had ever made. Then he was off to tell his partners at Colordry that he was headed to the US to team up with Colordry’s American agent.

The venture with the US agent wasn’t working out, “So about three or four months after setting up in the US, we (IVT and Colordry) decided we’re going to start our own business. We in- formed our agent that we wanted to start our own com- pany, which I would run, and they would be partners. That went over like a ‘Led Zeppelin’ and I was fired on the spot. However, I was confident that we could do it, and I never had any self-doubt. We were going to do it, and we were going to be successful!” The new company was called IVT Colordry. They sold infrared (IR) and UV curing systems, and later coaters for the ends of litho machines. IVT Colordry acquired the pat- ent for a coating tower and started installing them on the East German Polygraph Planeta litho press, which today John Bird was honored by the AICC after his tenure as Asso- ciate Chairman.
