On Monday, Enbridge Gas Distribution, the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council and The Nation Fire Department announced they are partnering to improve home safety and bring fire and carbon monoxide-related deaths down to zero. The Nation Fire Department received 144 combination smoke and carbonmonoxide alarms through Project Zero – a public edu- cation campaign that is providing a total of 3,300 alarms to residents in 15 Ontario municipalities. This year, Enbridge invested $100,000 in Project Zero. Since 2009, Project Zero has been delive- red to 85 Ontario communities. “The Nation Municipality is extremely grateful to be part of the Enbridge Gas Project Zero, said Fran- çois St-Amour, mayor of The Nation Muni- cipality. We have been fortunate enough to have been part of their Project Assist last year and are very thankful to have the opportunity to be part of the distribution of 144 combi- nation smoke and carbonmonoxide alarms to our residents.” “We are excited to have the opportunity to partner with Enbridge in this project and are advocates for the installation of combi- nation smoke and carbonmonoxide alarms in order to protect the families who live in The Nation, declaredThe Nation Fire Chief Tobias Hovey. We also encourage all our families not to forget about their cottages, camps and recreational trailers when thin- king of installing combination alarms.”
When properly installed andmaintained, combination smoke and carbonmonoxide alarms help provide the early warning that is needed to safety escape froma house fire or carbon monoxide exposure. “We have proof that prevention saves lives. Knowing this, we remain committed to educating our customers about the impor- tance of installing a combination smoke and carbonmonoxide alarm, as well as properly maintaining fuel-burning equipment”, says Rick Gazda, Enbridge Gas Distribution. Carbonmonoxide is a toxic, odorless gas that is a biproduct of incomplete combus- tion of many types of common fuels. It is important to all fuel-burning equipment be properly maintained to prevent car- bon monoxide buildup. Carbon monoxide alarms are recommended as a second line of defense to protect against the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. “It is essential that Ontarians protect themselves and their families from carbon monoxide poisoning”, said Ross Nichols, Ontario Fire marshal & chief of Emergency Management and chair of the FireMarshal’s Public Fire Safety Council. By installing car- bon monoxide alarms in your home, on every level and adjacent to sleeping areas, re- sidents can help prevent needless tragedies. Project Zero is an invaluable program that helps fire departments educate residents in their community about carbon monoxide alarms.”
