Bake­ huset had already started to reduce the amount of salt in its bread before 2012, and it has committed to reducing the salt content of its products as part of a government-led initiative.

Bakehuset, which is Norway’s biggest baking company, is made up of 11 local bakeries that between them cover most of the country. Preferences and traditions vary from region to region, so Bakehuset produces everything from local specialities to products that are very familiar all over Norway. The company, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of NorgesGruppen ASA, supplies its products to grocery stores, the Bunnpris chain, catering companies and the kiosk and Petrol station market. Up until 2016, Bakehuset was called Bakers AS. The company was found in 1971 through the merger of four bakeries in Eastern Norway. Since then the company has continued growing and expanding to new parts of Norway – always build- ing on old traditions and family histories. For example, Martens in Bergen is Bakehuset’s oldest bakery, with a history dating right back to 1753. Today the 11 local bakeries that make up Bakehuset are all part of the same united and enthusiastic baking family.
