Appendix – Glossary and timeline of phage therapy
Antagonistic
Characterized by or resulting from the opposition in physiological action. A collection of data usually in the form of a table summarizing the per cent of individual bacterial pathogens susceptible to different antimicrobial agents. A blood protein produced in response to and counteracting a specific antigen. Antibodies combine chemically with substances which the body recognizes as alien, such as bacteria, viruses, and foreign substances in the blood. The development by a disease-causing microbe, through mutation or gene transfer, of the ability to survive exposure to an antimicrobial agent that was previously an effective treatment. A virus which parasitizes a bacterium by infecting it and reproducing inside it. Denoting antibiotics, pesticides, etc. effective against a large variety of organisms. The protein coat or shell of a virus particle, surrounding the nucleic acid or nucleoprotein core. The action or process of using a centrifuge (a machine with a rapidly rotating container that applies centrifugal force to its contents), typically to separate fluids of different densities or liquids from solids. The treatment of disease by the use of chemical substances, especially the treatment of cancer by cytotoxic and other drugs.
