months and two days. Although we understand that rain does not last for this length of time, it maintains a proximity to reality, aided by its pretence of scientific specificity. This allows the reader to accept that in this world, Márquez’s world of Macondo, the rain is n ot as you may have previously thought, just as the narrative may not be the one you’ve been told by other narrative voices. To conclude, magical realism offers (South American) writers seeking to oppose a singularly dominant narrative the opportunity to do so through its self-conscious harnessing of the power of fantasy and fiction in opening our minds to alternative views and realities, and helps to demonstrate how, in fictional works, the fantastical can bring us closer to the truth than realism.
