DP World London Gateway welcomes BIFA Members

D P World London Gateway opened its doors to BIFA Members in January for two exclusive Insight Days. The grey skies and rain could not dampen the spirits of the 33 individuals who joined Denise Hill, BIFA member engagement director, on 23 January for the first DP World Insight tour of London Gateway Port for the year. The second group, made up of 31 BIFA Members of all ages and experience, was accompanied by Paul Newman, BIFA regional representative for the London East and Anglia areas, and was graced with bright sunshine for the visit. Expert commentary Both groups enjoyed an extensive introduction and tour of the port and logistics park with magnificent views of the entire operation from the coach with expert commentary from a member of the DP World team. Attendees witnessed vessels departing while other ships were unloaded, with the double discharge of two 40 ft and four 20 ft containers taking place at every lift. An interesting fact emerged about the four new ship-to-shore cranes, which are the largest in the UK, situated on the new Berth 4: the

boom/gantries are not allowed to be raised to the vertical position because they intrude into the air space of London City Airport. The coach tour of the logistics park that adjoins the port gave an insight into the number of warehouses in operation handling pet food, electronics, banana ripening and many other products. Facts and fi gures • Approximately 1 million TEU, or a 35% increase on previous capacity, will result during 2025 due to the Gemini Alliance move to London Gateway. • DP World has recruited

additional personnel, both operational on the port as well as in support services, to take account of this. • Berth 4 is now fully operational and is said to be the only fully electric berth in the world. • An additional two berths are in the planning stage. • A second railhead is being built which will enable the number of train services to double from 13 to 26 per day.
