A RCHITECTS & E NGINEERS By Thomas A. Bathgate, PE, PWI Engineering PWI Engineering - Dynamic Evolution
P
WI Engineering was founded in 1936 as an all purpose mechani-
In the 1940’s to 1960’s, the engineering practice evolved into more hospital systems en- gineering and into private and public education facilities. With a change in ownership in the 1980’s, PWI Engineering also changed its focus to include engineering of pharmaceutical and university projects along with building an expertise in Facility Energy Management. Some major projects engi- neered included: • Penn State’s Beaver Sta- dium Expansion
• Wyeth’s Research Facili- ties • Villanova’s Science Facili- ties • Pennsylvania Convention Center • Kimmel Performing Arts Center. In addition, PWI engineered over $4 billion of hospital projects from 1990 to 2010. Some mentionable projects included: • Temple University Hos- pital • Jersey Shore University Medical Center
• Morristown Memorial Hos- pital Patient Towers • Williamsport Hospital Re- placement Tower • Duke University Medical Center Clinics and South Hos- pital Renewal During this same time frame, an energy management team was formed to provide strategic planning, purchasing manage- ment, and energy retrofits for not only local concerns, but also for Exxon and American Home Products in 29 countries, worldwide. Today, as PWI Engineering
approaches its 80th birthday, it is still “building engineers” with in-house training pro- grams, diagnostic training us- ing the latest tools the industry can offer, along with in-house mentoring programs. The strength and momentum over nearly a century are founded upon the strength of PWI’s en- gineers and engineering staff. “Pushing the edges” has led PWI Engineering to be one of the few engineers on the globe to expand into the energy services field, using design engineers and a sprinkling of specialty experts for services such as: • Purchasing electricity, oil and natural gas, • Engineering combined heat and power systems (co- and tri- generation) for campuses, • Energy Audits and Ret- rofits, • Energy Grant and Incen- tive, Procurement and Man- agement, • Energy Planning and Edu- cation Programs, • Engineering sustainable technologies including wind, solar, and tidal systems, • Energy and Carbon Report- ing Services. “With a serious concern for our environment, the technical ability to save our clients seri- ous energy money, this energy focus has boosted our engineer- ing design skills to land many LEED awards. Our engineer- ing teams are continuously alert for opportunities to apply proven technologies that will save money, energy and emis- sions. We’ve been engineering high tech energy systems, such as CHP, for three decades now, where others are just newcom- ers. What’s in our future you ask? As we probe the edges of other technologies like “CNG” (compressed natural gas), bio- mass incineration, methane recovery technologies, and others, we’ll find some more “evolution” that will benefit our clients!” “At PWI Engineering, we’ve been proud of our commitment to service and ingenuity. The engineering business is dynam- ic, and if you don’t keep probing beyond your present abilities, you’ll be left behind!” Thomas A. Bathgate, PE, is president / CEO of PWI Engineering- formerly of Philadelphia since 1985 and recently branching into two offices - Cherry Hill, NJ and Jenkintown, PA in 2013 ■
