Decatur Alumni Chapter Hosts Voter Registration Drive The Decatur Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi organized a dynamic voter registration drive at two nearby high schools, Reagan High School and Cedar Grove High School, over the period of two weeks, from September 17 to October 1, 2024. The drive's objectives were rather clear: to register teenagers 17 and older to vote in future elections, to educate young people about their rights as voters, and to increase public awareness of the significance of voting.
In busy parts of the schools, the Kappa Alpha Psi brothers set up stalls. Carrying fliers and driven by a desire to change things, they involved students, a number of whom were only a few months away from obtaining voting rights. The volunteers gave an explanation of voting procedures, its significance, and the impact that each vote can have. They advocated for voter empowerment, particularly for those who were first-time voters. Students arrived with eagerness and interest. While some people were learning about the registration process for the first time, others were already aware of it. The brothers assisted students with the registration process and ensured they knew when and how to use their new rights. It had a huge effect. Dozens of teenagers not only registered to vote, but many also felt motivated and emboldened to get involved in their communities after leaving the booth. Teachers and staff also made an appearance to promote the project and stress to their kids the value of civic engagement.
The Decatur Alumni Chapter successfully registered and educated young voters at the conclusion of the two-week drive, ensuring that the future generation is ready to participate in the political process. It was an effort to teach the next generation the value of voting, not just a registration push.
