BROTHER JAMES SPENCER ROBINSON December 18, 1953 - July 8, 2024
Management Consultant specializing in Organizational Development, Human Capital Improvement, and Learning. For over 40 years, he led KDI Group Inc., a management consulting company he founded. Throughout his career, James held significant roles in higher education administration and workforce development. He was a devoted member of his church and served as an Elder and Sunday School Teacher. On a warm summer day, James was standing in line to purchase concert tickets at the Chene Park Music Theatre in Detroit, MI, where he spotted a woman who caught his eye. He was in constant prayer asking to find his wife, and upon seeing her, he said, "Lord, can it be like this?" That lady was Charlotte, and that encounter led to their marriage on October 8, 2016, officiated by Rev. Dr. Kevin Murriel at Cascade UMC in Atlanta, where they remained active members. They enjoyed life together, maintaining residences in both Michigan and Atlanta. Dr. James Spencer Robinson leaves a legacy of excellence, dedication, and love. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He leaves cherished memories with his wife, Charlotte Robinson; his children, Brannon and Shelby; two grandchildren, James Saxton and Johan Robinson; a big brother, Clifford Robinson (Cheryl); a little sister, Gayle Robinson; and a host of relatives, best friends, and family.
Dr. James Spencer Robinson was born on December 18, 1953, in Detroit, MI, to U.S. Army Staff Sergeant James H. Robinson and Carrie Robinson. His father, who retired from Ford Motor Company, and his mother, an education pioneer and Detroit Public Schools Principal, both preceded him in death. Raised in Highland Park, MI, in a loving middle-class family, James excelled in academics and athletics at Highland Park High School. He played varsity football, bass clarinet, and bass guitar, earning a "Who's Who" recognition. He further pursued his passion for the arts at the Interlochen Center for the Arts, followed by earning a music scholarship to Morris Brown College, where he played bass guitar for the “Marching Wolverines.” Dr. Robinson earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Morris Brown College, an MBA from Clark Atlanta University, and a Ph.D. from Wayne State University. In 2023, he was honored with the white jacket for fifty years of service to Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. James enjoyed meeting and talking to people, often striking up conversations with complete strangers. He enjoyed talking with youth and sharing his wisdom. James was a great father, who loved raising his children and watching them mature into respected adults. His grandchildren were also his pride and joy. He had a deep appreciation for sports, particularly golf, and was a huge fan of the Detroit Lions, Tigers, and Pistons. His adventurous spirit took him to Jamaica, the Bahamas, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and more. Professionally, James had a career in finance and accounting at Ford Motor Company, Hudson's, and Highland Park Community College. He later became a distinguished entrepreneur for many years in the food and beverage industry and continued as a
