Russell Ag Society announces new executive
Wheels and heels roll for cancer relief
September 8, following the Labour Day long weekend and a week before Terry Fox Day on September 16. It is scheduled for the same weekend as the annual Russell Fair, and Cross expressed hope that could help draw attention to the event from visitors coming in to Russell Township for the fair. The Heel ‘n’ Wheel is open to walkers, cyclists, and rollerbladers. There are seven optional routes that have their starting points in Russell, Crysler, Finch, Morrisburg, South Mountain, Osgoode and Greely, and range in distance from 24 to 33 kilometres, depending on the starting point. All the routes finish in Winchester at the hospital grounds where an afternoon barbecue and street party is planned for participants and supporters as part of the closing ceremony. “We’re looking to create a real celebration experience for those participating,” said Cross. Participants pay a minimal registration fee and then are encouraged to collect pledges for their individual treks. This year’s goal, Cross noted, is to have 250 participants spread over the seven routes. All the money raised goes towards local cancer support programs.

Every Canadian knows that Terry Fox Day in September is the time to get out and walk, run, or ride to help dream the dream of a cure for cancer alive. Directors at a regional hospital foundation are hoping to generate the same kind of enthusiasm on a smaller scale for a similar project to support local cancer care programs. The Winchester District Memorial Hospital Foundation (WDMH Foundation) will launch its inaugural Heel ‘n’ Wheel for Local Cancer Care event this September. Troy Cross, executive director for the foundation, is on tour around the Five Counties region to promote the project and ask local municipal councils for endorsements and help in publicizing the event. “All the funds that are raised are going to stay locally,” Cross said, during a presentation at the January 9 committee of the whole session for Russell Township council. Demandez la ligne Appel-santé. Le coût des produits de remplacement de la nicotine est un obstacle aux efforts d’arrêter de fumer et ce, pour un grand nombre de fumeurs. Les participants au programme STOP, qui est fondé sur l’expérience clinique, reçoivent gratuitement, pendant cinq semaines, des produits de remplacement de la nicotine. Ces produits atténuent les symptômes du sevrage à la nicotine et aident les fumeurs à abandonner le tabac. Le programme STOP est dispensé par le Centre de toxicomanie et de santé mentale (CAMH) et financé par le ministère de la Promotion de la santé et du Sport dans le cadre de sa stratégie Ontario sans fumée. En plus de suivre une TRN, les participants au programme STOP recevront des documents d’information les encourageant à apporter d’autres changements pouvant améliorer leur santé car, dans bien des cas, l’usage du tabac s’accompagne d’autres facteurs de risque pour la santé comme une mauvaise alimentation et l’inactivité physique. CAMH est le principal hôpital d’enseignement du Canada dans les domaines de la toxicomanie et de la santé mentale. Il aide à transformer la vie des personnes touchées par des problèmes de toxicomanie et des troubles de santé mentale en intégrant les soins cliniques, la recherche scientifique ainsi que les activités d’éducation, d’élaboration de politiques et de promotion de la santé.
