A NOTE FROM SYLVIA PROTECTING A LIFELINE FOR OUR COMMUNITY
In these pages I have written about what makes TPT special and relevant: our local stories, trusted public affairs coverage, children’s programming (including TPT’s own PBS Kids series "Skillsville"), and our deep commitment to serving Minnesota communities. But today, I write with urgency — not about what we will create next, but about what we stand to lose. Federal funding for public media is facing the greatest threat in its history. What is at risk is not just funding that supports beloved shows; rather the loss of federal funding will severely curtail our ability to deliver on our mission. Whether that be Pre-K educational resources, TPT Now (our multilingual public safety service), or thought-provoking discussions on "Almanac," TPT's mission to deliver free, accessible, local media will be impacted. Every dollar we receive from federal investment helps TPT unlock six more from local supporters. Our June programming reflects our mission AND includes great programming our audiences expect from TPT. From local favorites "This is Minnesota Orchestra: Fei Xie Plays André Jolivet" on June 6 at 8 pm (TPT 2) to the season six premiere of "Relish" on June 23 at 8 pm (TPT 2) to "Almanac" live every Friday night at 7 pm (TPT 2), we continue to deliver entertaining and thought-provoking Minnesota-produced content each week. National programs offerings this month include the archeological mini-series "Walking with Dinosaurs," the season ten premiere of "Grantchester" and "Caregiving" produced by actor Bradley Cooper, all of which reflect the diverse offerings of importance to our viewers. Through support by viewers like you, TPT is one of the most trusted and accessible media organizations in the country. If you believe in the mission of public media — and that everyone deserves access to trusted information and educational programming — please stand with Twin Cities PBS. You can visit TPT.org/Advocate to learn more about the specific ways you can help.

2024 IN REVIEW: COMMUNITY CONNECTION FROM THE TWIN CITIES PBS 2024 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY
At TPT, events are a vital way to connect communities, spark interactive learning, and bring local and national stories to life. By creating spaces for dialogue and discovery, we’re engaging Minnesotans in experiences that deepen understanding and inspire connection.
SUMMER MELSA EVENTS TPT teamed up with the MELSA Library System to offer 18 free family-friendly events with educational arts & crafts and “superpowers of science” activities designed for children ages 2-8 across the Twin Cities metro area, including several locations outside the metro core. In addition to meeting some of the characters from “Hero Elementary,” kids could take home a snack and some PBS goodies, including a copy of the Summer Activity Booklet filled with fun ways to learn all summer long. TPT also distributed an additional 3,000 Summer Activity Kits throughout the MELSA system. 2024 MELSA Program By the Numbers: • 18 library partners and events, compared to 7 in the previous year • 2,500 event attendees, compared to 780 in the previous year • 8 partnering county library systems • 3,000 activity kits distributed to 93 libraries
BE MY NEIGHBOR DAY On November 4, 2023, TPT hosted Be My Neighbor Day for our Twin Cities community. More than 300 of our youngest viewers (and their grown-ups) attended and experienced hands-on art and STEM activities, music, treats and PBS KIDS media.
I can’t really thank you enough – everyone who had a part in this, please know you are all making a difference, planting seeds of kindness for the next
generation. Thank you so much! – BE MY NEIGHBOR DAY ATTENDEE

BE MY NEIGHBOR DAY, HOPE IN THE STRUGGLE SCREENING, JESSE VENTURA SHOCKS THE WORLD SCREENING | PHOTO CREDIT UCHE IROEGBU
• “Hope in the Struggle”: Co-hosted with University of Minnesota’s Humphery School of Public Affairs, the sold-out premiere screening included an engaging discussion that was moderated by Executive Producer Daniel Bergin and featured Dr. Josie Johnson, along with her daughters, Josie Johnson and Norene Duffy, and her granddaughter, Josie Duffy Rice. • “Profe”: Community members were invited to TPT’s Street Space for a preview of “Profe” and a rich discussion moderated by Dr. Jessica Lopez Lyman and Producer Sergio Mata’u Rapu. The event featured inspiring words from film protagonists, along with Former State Representative Carlos Mariani Rosa. MINNESOTA STATE FAIR TPT returned to the Minnesota State Fair, offering an enhanced family-friendly space with shade, seating and daily activations like co-branded backpack giveaways, yard games, PBS KIDS character cutouts and a new interactive survey in which fans named “Wild Kratts” and “PBS News Hour” as their favorites. Kids Day featured a popular meet & greet with Daniel Tiger, and TPT also hosted an “Almanac” meet & greet with Cathy Wurzer and Kaomi Lee.
PREMIERE SCREENINGS FOR LOCAL HISTORY FILMS
• “Jesse Ventura Shocks the World!”: This sold-out event at The Main Cinema included an energetic talk-back after the film that was moderated by Tane Danger and featured “Almanac’s” Mary Lahammer and Eric Eskola. • “The Electric Indian”: In working with Henry Boucha’s family and Hockey Day MN, an estimated 400 people attended this premiere screening in Henry’s hometown of Warroad. Producer Leya Hale led a talk-back with three of Henry’s grandchildren, which inspired an engaging conversation about his legacy, Warroad’s responsibility to the Indigenous community and what they all hoped would be the response to the film. [I have] greater appreciation for the role TPT has in representing [a] variety of communities while creating community in MN. [I’m] likely to increase my monthly contribution. – EVENT ATTENDEE

Book It By Laurie Bain Wilson
Wherever I travel, I always visit the local library. Libraries are home to many books, of course, but it's often the library itself that holds the most compelling stories — giving an authentic sense of a place that tourist attractions often don't. My favorite library is a small turquoise jewel, the Mackinac Island Public Library, located on Mackinac Island in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. This gem is painted varying shades of vibrant colors — inside walls are bright turquoise and quartz rose pink, and the building's exterior is a robin's egg blue.
My favorite library is a small turquoise jewel, the Mackinac Island Public Library.
Not surprising in a city that revolutionized America, The Boston Public Library (BPL), which debuted in 1848, pioneered the public library service in this country as the first large, free municipal library; the first public library to lend books; the first to have a branch library and the first to have a children's room. The present Central Library in Copley Square has been home to the library and served as its headquarters since 1895, when Charles Follen McKim built his 'palace for the people.' "When travelers come to the Boston Public Library, they aren't just coming to see a beautiful, historical building," says Bailey Watroba of BPL. "The experience should also leave them feeling heartened that today's libraries are thriving epicenters of civic engagement."
The library is basically one main reading room, with an antique chandelier that presides when the natural light isn't bathing those bright walls — that chandelier once hung in John Jacob Astor's mansion in Newport, Rhode Island. A smaller room, The Rosa Webb Room, holds the Mackinac Collection, a historic collection on Michigan; it is named for the woman who established Mackinac's first library. "The back porch of the library is everyone's secret spot no one else knows about," says director Anne St. Onge. There are Adirondack chairs there to sit and take in the lake view — and to read, of course. My second favorite library, the Boston Public Library, is another story entirely and should be on every traveler's list when visiting the Massachusetts city.

An Old Recipe Box Dishes Up a Memorable Afternoon By Patricia Corrigan
Though I don't cook often, my small slow cooker often works overtime to produce soups and stews that fill the apartment with tantalizing aromas. One recent afternoon, instead of sifting through recipes saved online or stuffed in a file folder, I dusted off the top of my old recipe box in search of inspiration. I found that, and much more. Tucked inside were faded index cards splattered from use, tattered pages torn from cookbooks long since donated and recipes ripped from magazines, including one swiped long ago from the dentist's office. Dozens of recipe cards, many written out and shared by dear friends, were organized behind the appropriate tabs for appetizers, casseroles and desserts. To my surprise, a ticket stub from a Beatles concert in 1966 lurked among directions for soups, poultry dishes and breads. Behind other tabs were my son's school photo from second grade (he's 50 now), a book author's return address label (he's dead now) and a wallet-size photo of my senior prom date (he's alive, and we're still in touch).
The secret to perfect sangria, coaxed long ago from a restaurant owner, was scribbled on the back of a menu. (Add some port.) Next, I unfolded directions for gazpacho Andaluz, scored from a reader when I worked as a food writer at a daily newspaper. The cranberry ginger conserve recipe from the New York Times reminded me of many festive family dinners. Riffling through my recipes and mementoes, I pulled out a card for pot roast made in a slow cooker. Then I noticed a small silver key at the bottom of the box. I've long forgotten what it's for, but exploring the contents of the long-neglected little box that afternoon nourished my soul.
A ticket stub from a Beatles concert in 1966 and theater tickets from a trip to New York City in 1998 lurked among directions for soups, poultry dishes and breads.

At the back of the box, a folded envelope held half a teaspoon of red dirt that had inadvertently collected in my rolled-up jean cuffs on a trip 42 years ago to Ayers Rock (now known as Uluru) in Australia.

“Book Drop” Activate! TPT's new children's series encourages literacy and science learning.
Get to Know “Book Drop”
“Book Drop” is a new children’s series from Twin Cities PBS that explores Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) through the perspective of two curious siblings, Isaiah and Ellie. Whether it’s designing water bottle rockets, maintaining a garden, or building obstacle courses, they love to learn by trying new activities. When Isaiah and Ellie run into a problem they can’t solve, they call on their animated friends, Kitty and Leo, at the Book Drop headquarters for assistance. Together, with the help of the Book Drop computer voiced by Whoopi Goldberg, Kitty and Leo search for a storybook that will inspire their real-life friends. In addition, Kitty and Leo invite extra help from a real-life professional working in STEM to bring the story to life.
“I think kids and parents will love watching the interactions between the real and animated characters and will really connect with the curiosity of the characters!” says Katie Hessen, TPT’s Manager of Children's Media and Education and Executive Producer of “Book Drop.”
Problem Solve Like a Scientist
“Book Drop” in the Community
Funded by the National Science Foundation, the goal of "Book Drop” is to introduce 4-8 year olds to STEM learning. Literacy is a key learning goal for this age group, and each episode incorporates read-alouds from STEM-focused storybooks. “Book Drop” invites learners to think like scientists. Instead of presenting singular solutions to the situations that Isaiah and Ellie face, the characters find inspiration from books and mentors and creatively solve their problems. And just like scientists, they encourage learners to ask questions, conduct observations, and test their predictions. The series features energetic animation and catchy music that make learning fun. Characters zoom through space. Trucks transform into space shuttles. At the same time, Isaiah and Ellie deal with scenarios that kids their age will find relatable, like reorganizing a messy playroom or finishing a class science experiment.
Alongside the episodes, TPT's Center for Lifelong Learning team created standards-aligned resources and implemented educational programming with community partners and families. The Lifelong Learning team partnered with over 20 libraries nationwide to share episodes and in-person activities with youth and their families. Families also received “Book Drop” kits, including the featured storybooks and materials needed to continue learning at home. Partnerships with libraries deepened the project’s impact nationwide and connected TPT with families across the country. “It was wonderful to see how this program gave libraries the confidence to continue to incorporate STEM in their programming in a fun and engaging way!” says Julie Noyes, TPT’s Lead Administrative Specialist and Co-Producer of “Book Drop.”
