Harold’s Monumental Moped Mistake Siblings Day Sent Me Down Memory Lane!
pulled over. Luckily for them, the officer didn’t have the heart to give three 12-year-olds a ticket.
I’m the oldest of four siblings, and when we were young, our dad went against our mother’s wishes and bought us a moped. As you can imagine, it wasn’t the brightest idea. Things might have turned out differently if my sister, Anabella, and I had the bike to ourselves. We’re the more responsible, rule-following siblings. But it ended up in the hands of our younger brothers: Alex (the free-spirited middle child) and Harold (the baby). One day, 12-year-old Harold and two of his friends hopped onto the moped and rode off down the Loma Linda back roads. Just picture it: three kids piled on a bike without a helmet in sight. I watched them disappear, then promptly forgot about it. I was just starting to wonder where they’d gotten to when I heard a brisk “knock, knock, knock” on our front door. It was a police officer! He handed my mom a set of keys and said, “Make sure they don’t ride that thing again. They should be here in a little while.” An hour later, we found out what the cop meant. He’d taken the keys, so Harold and his friends had to push the bike all the way back to our house from where they’d gotten
My siblings and I are all less than five years apart, so that was just one of many chaotic moments in our house. Fortunately, we turned out pretty well. All four of us work in the medical field and live within 10 miles of each other and our parents. Anabella is a trauma ICU nurse, Alex is trained as an interventional radiology technician (although he now runs a staffing company), and Harold is a physical therapist, just like me. The four of us help each other and our parents out all of the time. A few weeks ago, Harold and I even met up to treat some of our dad’s musculoskeletal issues. It felt fun to brainstorm together, talk about Dad’s tight spots and weak areas, and throw ideas back and forth until we came up with the best treatment plan. I started thinking about these old and new stories when I heard that April 10 is National Siblings Day. I’m lucky to have not one but three siblings to enjoy life with! I’m the goal-setter, Anabella is the organized one, Alex is the impulsive traveler, and Harold is the nurturing
caretaker. Our kids are just as close as we are, so we spend a lot of time water skiing, taking houseboat trips, snow skiing and snowboarding at Mammoth Mountain, hiking, mountain biking, and hitting the beach as an extended family. (Between the four of us, we have 10 kids who make their grandparents very, very happy.) I know that few people are as lucky as I am in the sibling department, but I hope my kids stay as close as my brothers and sisters. I don’t mean geographically — although that would make visits a lot easier. Regardless of where they live, if Kaden and Macy still get along, make plans together, and go on adventures into adulthood, I’ll know I did something right.
If you have brothers or sisters, don’t forget to wish them a happy National Siblings Day!

NEED A NUTRITIONAL BOOST?
Try the Nordic Diet!
fat than olive oil and other processed options. You’re supposed to eat a decreased amount of sugar and twice the amount of fiber and seafood than a typical diet. Some phenomenal physical health benefits come with switching over to the Nordic diet. It helps reduce inflammation throughout the body and can even reduce your risk of getting Type 2 diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. Many people who tried the diet noticed decreased cholesterol and lower blood pressure while they followed these guidelines, even saying they lost weight or had an easier time staying in shape. You may have seen the Nordic diet on the news after Noma, a three- Michelin-star restaurant known for its Nordic menu, recently closed in Copenhagen. Food critics and patrons rated this restaurant as one of the best in the world, but the owner found the grueling hours and intense workplace culture unsustainable. So, still wanting to work in the food industry, he converted Noma into a food laboratory. You can change and improve your diet anytime, but experts recommend the Nordic diet for its many health benefits. Make sure you pick up whole grains, fruits, vegetables, fatty fish, and other items next time you go to the grocery store. You’ll be amazed how what you eat can improve how you feel.
Every other month, new dieting fads seem to take the world by storm. Some popular diets aren’t beneficial, while others have incredible health benefits, so how do people know what’s worth trying? Luckily, one recent diet out there may be a little bit more credible than the rest: the Nordic diet. Nutritionists, scientists, and chefs decided to create this diet in 2004 to help slow obesity rates and unsustainable farming practices in Nordic countries, but it might help residents of the U.S., too! The Nordic diet emphasizes consuming food high in protein, complex carbohydrates, and healthy fats. Fruits, vegetables, and seafood are common on Nordic diet menus, but what separates the Nordic diet from the others is that it uses canola oil, which has less saturated

“I was referred to Focus PT to treat some overworked muscles that I got from baking for days on end over the holidays. I ended up in tons of pain, and baking was no longer an option. Luckily, within 8 weeks, the Focus team eliminated the pain and helped me build up strength in my back and shoulder muscles. I’m so happy to be baking again! Olita has miracle hands, and Bryant is so knowledgeable and informative.”

Painkillers and surgical operations are the last things any of us want. Yet most people with musculoskeletal discomforts, like neck or back pain, are often told these are their only solutions for relief. Well, we have great news! StemWave™ Technology is an FDA-listed treatment for musculoskeletal pain, and it’s now available right here at Focus Physical Therapy. This type of shockwave therapy has become a unique technology for physical therapy, and we are excited to introduce it to you! How does StemWave™ Technology work? Also known as extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT), StemWave™ Technology is an upgraded shockwave treatment that uses sound waves to naturally promote healing to specific areas of the body that are injured or in pain. The sound waves can cause a shock to the body and make it believe that the targeted area is damaged to promote faster healing. No damage is actually done to the body’s cells, but the sound waves will mimic it and encourage the body to repair itself. How is this treatment different from regular shockwave therapy? StemWave™ Technology’s unique design can target larger areas of the body and promote healing even deeper into the muscles. This

Easy Fruit Dip Go Fly a Kite!
4
Flying a kite is a quintessential spring activity, especially for children. But if you struggled to keep your kite in the air as a kid, you’re not alone. Fortunately, you can use a few simple tricks to significantly improve your skills — and help your child become the best kite-flier on the block. Find the right spot. Hopefully, it goes without saying that you shouldn’t fly kites near power lines. Flying it near trees and cars is also a bad idea. It’s best to have at least a quarter-mile open space around you for safety and the best wind conditions. Beaches, empty sports fields, and parks with wide open areas are the perfect places to get your kite airborne. Have the wind at your back. Literally! This position will allow you to watch your kite as it ascends into the air. On a sufficiently windy day, simply holding the kite up by its lowest point and letting go as you unspool your string will be enough to launch it into the sky. When it’s not windy enough for your kite to take flight, try a long-line launch by unspooling about 50 feet of string in a straight line and then taking off running. Remember that kite-flying simply won’t work on some days. If your kite keeps crashing tail first, it may indicate too little wind, while a head-first kite fall may mean too strong a breeze.
Fly a Kite Like a Pro
3 Expert Tips and Tricks
Keep it tight. Launching your kite is usually the trickiest part of the process, but keeping it aloft isn’t always straightforward. To ensure your kite stays in the air, you must retain tension on the string — but not too much. It’s time to reel out some of the line when the kite begins to tug. But too much string can weigh down your kite and bring it back to earth. When your line starts to slack, slowly spool it in until it feels taut. Keep your eyes on your kite and your mind on the reel, and you’ll be flying like a pro in no time.
