By and by, another horseman rode up to the boy as he trudged on, and made the same demand: “ Boy, what have you got?” ‘‘Forty gold dinars, sewed up in my waistcoat,” said the boy again. This Bedouin, too, burst out laughing, and turned away, thinking the boy was making fun of him. They had some talk in their band about the boy’s strange reply. Their leader, turning it over in his mind, said he would like to see him, and leaving the troop, soon overtook the young trav eler. He put the same question as had the others, and again the boy gave the same answer. The captain leaped off his horse and began to feel the boy’s clothes, till he counted—one, two, three—the forty gold dinars, just as he had been told. “What made you tell the truth, my boy?” he asked. “My God and my mother, sir,” was the reply. “Wait for me here a little,” said the captain, and galloped back to his troop. In a few minutes he returned, but so changed that the boy hardly knew him. By the re moval o f a false beard and other disguises, his appearance was quite altered. “ Come with me, my lad,” he said; and he pointed to the spires o f a distant city. “ I cannot go with you,” said the boy; “you are a robber!” “ I was,” the man said, “ but all that is over now 1 I have given it up forever. I have a large business in yonder city, and I wish you to come with me and share it.” And so they went together; and when they arrived at the city, the boy entered his employment, and ultimately became very wealthy and influential .—Tools for Teachers, by William Moodie. A Man Who Told the Truth 1 K in g s 22:1-18, 29-3S Memory Verse: “My mouth shall speak truth” (Prov. 8 :7 ). Approach: One time Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, came to Ahab, the king of Israel. Ahab asked Jehoshaphat to help him fight against the Syrians. Jehosha vice about going to battle. But these were false prophets. Instead o f telling the truth, they always told the king the things that would please him. They told the king to go to battle, and they promised that the Lord would deliver the city o f the Syrians to the king. But there was one true prophet named Micaiah, and Jehoshaphat said that this true prophet must be allowed to give ad vice, too. Then Micaiah came before them and said: “I saw all Israel scattered upon the hills, as sheep that have not a shepherd: and the Lord said, These have no master: let them return every man to his house in peace.” The prophecy meant that the peo ple would be scattered in the battle, and that they would have no master or king. But neither o f the kings would listen to Micaiah. Ahab had him bound and put in prison, and Jehoshaphat was persuaded to join with Ahab in battle against the Syrians. Now the king o f Syria wanted most of all to kill Ahab. Before evening, one of * / y i S \ 0 ‘ phat said something like this: “ W h a t does God tell the prophets a b o u t the battle? the soldiers shot with his bow, and the arrow wounded Ahab and he died. How sad was his end! How much better was Micaiah, the man who was not afraid to tell the truth! Even though he was sent to prison by Ahab, he had nothing to fear. God was on his side.
cracked. You do not have to talk long with a boy or girl until you will find out whether or not he or she rings true. A liar will always lie if he thinks he will not be caught and will be benefited by the lie. It always takes, a larger lie to cover the one just before it. The liar for gets that God has said: “ Be sure your sin will find you out,” and, “Lying lips are abomination to the Lord.” A truthful boy or girl can always be de pended on to tell the truth, even though it may not appear to be to his or her advan tage to do so. The man about whom we studied this morning in our Sunday-school lesson told the truth when no one but God wanted him to. The king did not want the truth, and ordered this prophet to be put in prison because he would not tell a lie. The king had other prophets who did lie as he wanted them to, but God has not even given us their names in His Word. These other men were not worth naming. Micaiah was the man who told the truth, and God has taken particular care that his name and example should be kept for us. I f a great musician intended using bells with which to make a musical instrument, he would not use a cracked bell, for he could never be sure o f the tone. Neither will the Lord use a liar in His service. The coward lies; the truly brave boy or girl will always tell the truth.

Objects: Two bells. (One should be cracked to the extent that it will give a false note.) Lesson: Did you ever stop to realize how much bells are like boys and girls? These two bells look alike, but they are far from being the same. One is a liar, and the other tells the truth. As I tap them, see if you can tell which is the liar. Yes, it is this one. It does not ring true. It is
