we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together" (Rom. 8:17). Children o f God, your Father “knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him,” and He bids you trust H im : “Fear not, little flock.” The children are a timid folk, and the family disease is fear; there fore He says, “ Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.” Answer all your doubts, settle all your anxieties, silence all your fears with this, “ Fear not I” — M ar cu s R ain sfo rd . JULY 11 The Meaning of the White Stone “And will give him a white stone" (Rev. 2:17). My Lord will give to me a white stone I Is there anything more exquisitely clean than a white pebble? . . . “I will give to thee a life so washed every day by the waters of grace that every part o f thy being shall be as clean as a white stone. . . Perfectly pure I will make thee—and hard!” Oh, it is not the hardness of in sensitiveness, but the hardness o f strength. The man whose moral muscles are as hard as pebbles, cannot be broken by any temp tations which assail him. That is the character we want—rock-character I Then there is this beautiful addition—“ In the stone a new name written.” . . . No one will enter into the meaning o f it except the one to whom it is given. . . . When the Lord calls you by your n?w name, no one else will respond to it but you. — J. H . J o w ett . JULY 12 You— and God “I f ye shall ask . . . I will do” (John 14:14). Think a moment of that unsaved loved one for whom, all these years, you have been doing. You have pleaded, argued, ex postulated in vain. You have preached Christ, you have tried to live Christ. You have exhausted every device and means that love, faith, or hope could conceive. Now that all your doing has failed, how wondrous it would be to bring into that life His doing through your asking 1 Hear Him speak : My child, you know not how to convict o f sin, but I, who work as you pray, can bow that soul in a very agony o f conviction. You know not when to woo, and when to reprove, but I, who work as you ask, know just when to pour in the balm of love, and when to let fall the sharp, quick blow of needed judgment. You can not follow a soul in daily, unbroken pur suit, for you are finite, and must eat, rest, and sleep, but I, who do as you ask, follow that soul day and night, with sleepless vigilance, through every second o f his ex istence—now comforting, now troubling; now giving darkness, now light; now sending prosperity, now adversity; now using the knife, now the healing balm; chastening, troubling; bereaving, blessing, bending, breaking, making: Yes, I can do all things needful to be done to bring that wanderer to himself and cause him to cry, “ I will arise and go to my father.”— Life o f Faith. JULY 13 Receive and Give "Receive ye the Holy Ghost” (John 20:22). The, open heart shall be filled. “ Open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.” The heart of God has more to give us than we can receive. . . . As we pour out the blessing, God will pour it And our blessing should always be twice blessed.

yourself in continual touch with God, the fountain o f all power. Our strength de pends upon ourselves, because our strength is the fruit of our faith. And if we live with God, grasping His hand and, in the realizing consciousness o f our own weak ness, looking beyond ourselves, then power will come to us above our desire and equal to our need.— A le x a n d e r M a c lare n . JULY 7 Ask, Remember, Teach “Learn o f me” (Matt. 11:29). Some one has said, “The secret of learn ing is to ask much.” I f we would learn of Christ, we must “ask much." W e must not be timid in our approach. He is “able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think.” This is one of the great secrets of progressive learning. “Remem ber much!" Ah, there is the difficulty for many o f u s! W e can take, but we cannot keep. . . . Only let us be honest and eager, sincere and ingenious, and He will work to the establishment of our souls in the knowl edge o f God. “ Teach much!” W e shall never really know Christ as He is to be known, until we begin to tell what we al ready know .' In the realm of religion, we never really know until we testify. Is there anything you know about the Lord? Tell the little you know, and the little will grow.— J. H. J o w ett . JULY 8 The Wounds of a Two-Edged Sword “Judge not, that ye be not judged” (Matt. 7 :1 ). . If you have a spirit of censoriousness, o f criticism, o f searching out iniquities, of condemning, of evil speaking, of slander and backbiting, you know nothing of the spirit of Christ . . . There is no place where the conscience of Christians is so callous and blind as in this matter o f judg ing one another. Our concern is the “love that thinketh no evil” and that covers all sin. Oh, the wounds we cause in the heart o f Christ and the hearts of our brethren by the lack of love! Bitterness, malice, calumny, are as the piercing of a sword to those against whom they are turned. But it is a two-edged sword, and the keenest wound is given to the hand that wields it. —A. B. S im p s o n . JULY 9 Obey the Divine Impulse “Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it" (John 2:5 ). One o f the outstanding needs of Chris tian workers today is a willingness to obey the divine impulse without waiting to con sider precedents. It is impossible to think of Mary standing with the alabaster box in her hands, discussing within herself the question as to whether some other gift would qot meet the necessities o f the case without parting with so costly a treasure. . . . W e are too apt to be governed by the consideration as to what other people would do. . . . Even when we feel moved by the Spirit o f God to some act of service or self-sacrifice for the Master, we are apt to be swayed by our “second thoughts.” Not so Mary! Her Lord must have her great est treasure, although it involved the accu sation o f unnecessary wastefulness. Better it is to allow Judas to condemn our act than to offer Christ our second best. — F . J. H orsefield . JULY 10 Father’s Call to Fearlessness “I f children, then heirs; heirs o f God, and joint-heirs with Christ, if so be that
