his way to the Benchers’ Chambers, and pressed them for the needed words. One of the Masters, becoming angry, rose up and said to the mechanic: “Go about your business!” The latter, thinking this was the order, placed the words on the face of the clock, and there they were allowed to remain. If Christian workers would have for their motto, “ Go about your Father’s business,” what mighty wonders would be accomplished! “Father, where shall I work today?” And my love flowed warm and free. Then He pointed me out a tiny spot And said, “ Tend that for Me.” I answered quickly, “ Oh, no, not there; Why, no one would ever see, No matter how well my work was done; Not that little place for met” And the word He spoke, it was not stern; He answered me tenderly, “Ah, little one, search that heart of thine; Art thou working for them, or Me? Nazareth was a little place, And so was Galilee.” —Sunday School Times. JULY 16 What Must It Be to See Jesus? “And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their forehedtis” (Rev. 22:4). Seeing God —this is the supreme joy of heaven: “They shall see his face.” Here below we see only footprints of God in His works, in creation, providence, and re demption; but there we shall behold the unveiled God in Christ. Our Lord will be then to us by sight that which He is now to us by faith—the image and manifesta tion o f God. And this will be our tran scendent privilege, to see “the King in his beauty.” W e may quietly ponder and try to imagine what it will be to see Christ for the first time. We know how the heart kindles at the sight of the dearest one of earth; we know how the whole nature is stirred by the fellowship therefrom result ing; we know how feelings long pent up are suddenly poured out to one concerning whom absence has made the heart grow fonder. If these are so in earthly friend ship, what must it be, what will it be, to see Him of whom we have so long read, in whom we have so long believed, to whom we have so long prayed, for whom we have so long labored, whom we have so long loved, “this same Jesus,” whom we shall see for ourselves and our eyes shall behold and not a stranger, whose friendship is be yond comparison, whose fellowship is im perishable, whose love is eternal! —W . H. G r if f it h T h o m a s . JULY 17 A Child’s “ Poison” “ Thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children" (Deut. 6 :7 ). A little girl, being asked by a priest to attend his religious instruction, refused, saying it was against her father’s wishes. The priest said that she should obey him and not her father. “Oh, sir, we are taught in the Bible, ‘Honor thy father and thy mother.’ ” “You have no business to read the Bible,” said the priest. “ But, sir, our Saviour said, ‘Search the Scriptures.’ ” “That was only to the Jews, and not to children, and you don’t understand it,” said the priest in reply. “ But Paul said to Timofhy, ‘From a child thou hast known the holy Scriptures.’ ” “ Oh,” said the priest, “ Timothy was being trained to be a bishop, and taught by the authority of the church.” “ Oh, no, sir,” said the child, “he was taught by his mother and his

grandmother.” On this the priest turned away, saying she knew enough of the Bible to poison a parish!— Christian Herald. JULY 18 Perfect Redeemer “In him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily" (Col. 2 :9 ). You cannot have the Father without the Son. He Himself said, “No man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6). A deist can say, “ I believe in God A l mighty, Maker o f heaven and earth” ; but only a Christian can add, “the Father,” and continue, “and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord.” It cannot be too often or too plainly affirmed that Christianity is the revelation o f the redeeming love o f God, a revelation made in and by One who was and is Himself the God-Man—Redeemer. Christianity is Christ. —W . G r a h a m S croggie . There is in the Lord Jesus a perfect evenness o f various perfections. All the elements o f perfect character are in lovely balance. His gentleness is never weak. His courage is never harsh. —C. I. S cofield . It is a mockery for me to pray to God for forgiveness, if I don’t forgive. “ If ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.” I believe that is the test of true disciple- ship. If I say with my lips what I do not mean with my heart, it is an abomination and an insult to God. It is a downright mockery. If we would have our tres passes forgiven, we must forgive those who trespass against us. Before offering thy gift upon the altar, be reconciled to thy brother. You will find it easy to pray then. How can I ask1God to forgive me ten thousand sins, if I cannot forgive my brother one offense?—D. L. M oody . JULY 20 Christ as Master of One’s Thoughts “ Bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience o f Christ” (2 Cor. 10:5). Are there any tyrants more harassing than our own thoughts? Instead o f our dominating them, they have dominated u s; and we have not, expected, nor even thought it possible, to be set free from the manifold tyranny of vain thoughts, and still less of wandering thoughts. . . . Must it not be glorious rest to have every thought, o f day and night, brought into sweet, quiet, complete captivity to Jesus, entirely “obedient to the faith,” to His holy and loving influence, to His beautiful and perfect law? But, before this triumph leading o f every thought can take place, there is the “ casting down imaginations," or, as in the Revised Version margin, “reasonings.” As long as we are reason ing about a promise, we never know its reality. . . . Has it not always been, that we had to lay down our arms and accept God’s thought and God’s way instead o f our own ideas ? It is the old way, and the only way: “Who through faith . . . obtained promises.” — F ran ces R idley H avergal . JULY 21 Fullness “ The Lord’s portion is his people" (Deut. 32:9). W e are taught not only that God is the JULY 19 Mockery "Condemn not, and ye shall not be con demned : forgive, and ye shall be forgiven” (Lk. 6:37).
