RSL moves rapidly on change

As you are all aware our core service delivery – advocacy and welfare – is being totally restructured. This is essential if we wish to appeal to all age groups of Veterans. As you read this, our new RSL DefenceCare team is undergoing training in Sydney and on Monday August 15 they will begin operations from ANZAC House in Perth. The team comprises of Barry Chalk (Manager RSL DefenceCare WA), Morgana Ramsey (Claims Advisor) and Rosalind Howat, who will be providing a community support role. Barry and Morgana have both served with the Royal Australian Navy - Barry for 28 years and Morgana for 10. Barry also has six years’ experience with DVA. Barry and Morgana will undertake training in Sydney from July 25 2016, returning to WA with an RSL DefenceCare mentor in mid-August. currently undertaking an audit of the ANZAC House Advocacy Department, will continue the audit on a part time basis until completed later this year. Fergus will come under RSL DefenceCare from early August, at which time Carl Ponnuthurai will leave RSLWA. One of the key roles of RSL DefenceCare WA will be to assist in the training of advocates throughout our sub-branches. The development of our core business is critical and I urge all members to welcome aboard and support our new team. CONT. PAGE 2 Fergus Beer, who is

The Returned & Services League is rapidly moving forward in Western Australia with major changes in service delivery, structures and even our headquarters – ANZAC House. I’m mindful, however, that as exciting as these changes may be, we are still a people organisation devoted to caring for all of our 10,000 members and 128 active sub-branches. So, allow me to start by paying tribute to Banjo Pattison, a Korean War Veteran who we recently lost after a long illness. Banjo was, for many who visited ANZAC House, the face of the RSL. He volunteered to stand at the front door for hours each day and greet visitors and in doing so signed up more than 200 new RSL members. He did this day after day, short of breath and determined to remain ‘on watch’ despite the CEO’s pleading to rest at home. His dedication and subsequent death prompted dozens of comments on our Facebook Page from colleagues who served with him as a Navy medic, to people who he only had met at the door. RIP Banjo as you enjoy a heavenly red. It is unfortunate that the RSL loses such outstanding people as Banjo and Rob Noble, who was President of Canning Districts RSL Sub-Branch for the past five years. Sadly, last year we lost 280 members. It places a great challenge before us to continue growing membership. Fortunately, our membership is growing and the RSL is doing the right things to build on the momentum.
