Faculty of Law ‘Punches Above Its Weight'

O n 30 March 2022, Professor Antoine delivered the fifth and final lecture in the Distinguished Lectures Series that was part of events held to celebrate the 50 th Anniversary of the Faculty of Law at Cave Hill. In speaking on the topic “The UWI Faculty of Law’s Contribution to the Caribbean” , she sought to cover the breadth and depth of its contribution to legal and social development, which she admitted was enormous, prolific and impactful. “There are certain areas where the faculty has led the way, not just in jurisprudence but policy direction, legal reform, social reform and development. Many of these subjects were interrogated

through substantial consultancy work by the faculty or individual members, and they produced influential technical reports on a wide array of significant subjects. That started from the very beginning of the life of the faculty.” The professor said the contribution of the Faculty of Law extended beyond an advisory capacity as many of its graduates went on to become presidents, prime ministers, judges, administrators, attorneys- general, international jurists, and legal drafters and have served and continue to function in numerous other positions of influence. “We have, therefore, been placed in positions with direct responsibility and opportunity for real change and development, and these opportunities have been seized. The Faculty of Law at The UWI, Cave Hill Campus has been credited for ‘punching well beyond its weight’ and making invaluable and immense legal contributions that have helped to shape and define Caribbean societies. The glowing assessment was given by former Pro Vice- Chancellor of Graduate Studies and Research at the St. Augustine Campus, Professor Rose-Marie Belle Antoine , an alumna of the faculty. Months after this evaluation, she was promoted to the post of Principal of the St. Augustine Campus.
