Mums’ Sugary Intake Fuels Childhood Obesity
by Carol Williams
T he study entitled “A Weakness for Sweetness: An investigation of the prevalence, frequency and potential impacts of antenatal use of SSBs in Barbados” was conducted by Cave Hill researcher Dr. Asanchia Harewood-Marshall who found that frequent antenatal use of SSBs is likely to be “an insidious driver of childhood obesity rates” in Barbados and elsewhere. The findings were presented during the 22 nd Annual Professor E R Walrond Scientific Symposium held virtually last July. In explaining the reason for her study, Dr. Harewood-Marshall noted
Pregnant women who consume sugar- sweetened beverages (SSBs) regularly are likely to give birth to children who are prone to develop obesity, according to a study conducted by a recent graduate of the Doctor of Medicine in Family Medicine at The UWI, Cave Hill Campus.
