Two New Cave Hill Professors

2016-2020. During his second term, he was reappointed University Dean of Law in 2018 and served in that capacity until 2020. Berry, who specialises in international law, is currently serving as a Key Legal Expert with CARICOM’s Consultancy for the Review of Caribbean Community Institutions , as well as a member of the CARICOM Regional Advisory Group on Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction . Additionally, he is an arbitrator in a case at the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes . The legal scholar has built an impressive body of work including eight peer-reviewed journal articles, one independently authored monograph, one co-edited book, nine book chapters, and three technical papers. He has also published four non-refereed journal articles and three book chapters, and he has been invited to make over 80 academic presentations. His book, Caribbean Integration Law (Oxford University Press, 2014), has been widely cited in academic circles and before the Caribbean Court of Justice . Professor Berry has received several accolades for his work within and outside of the university, including the Principal’s Award for Excellence in 2014, and the faculty’s Best Lecturer of the Year Award (Level II) between 2001 and 2006. He was featured in The UWI’s 60 th Anniversary publication 60 Under 60 in 2008 and was inducted into the Eminent Caribbean International Law Jurists Hall of Fame in 2019.

Exceptional accomplish- ment in the fields of law and music earned two Cave Hill academics the highest academic rank within The UWI community. Former Dean of the Faculty of Law Professor David Berry and Dean of the Faculty of Culture, Creative and Performing Arts (FCCPA) Professor David Akombo earned their professorships following rigorous assessment by independent external appraisers that included evaluation of the quality and quantity of their research, publications, and other professional activities.

P rofessor Berry’s elevation to the highest academic rank comes after 25 years of service to the institution. Prior to this latest appointment, he was a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Law at Cave Hill. In 2012, he became the first University Dean of Law, following the creation of full Faculties of Law at The UWI, St. Augustine and Mona Campuses. He held that post for two years.
