A LONG-TERM PROJECT NOW COMPLETE Since the family hardware business came under the RONA banner in 2006, J. Lalonde & Fils had always seemed to be the perfect candidate for expanding the Canadian hardware and home improvement franchise into Rockland. Intrigued and attracted by the idea, Robert, France and Serge Lalonde still took time to consider all sides of the situation before making their joint decision to go ahead and dive into the project. Four years later, the dream became a reality thanks to a well-conceived business plan to guide the team. First step was a market study to determine the right location and also size for the second outlet. The Lalondes wanted a site that would be strategic, for both the local consumer and also the development sector which would be part of the store’s service market. The site had to be easy to nd and easy to access. That led to the Richelieu Road location. Being part of an existing large shopping centre complex made perfect sense, especially one located along County Road 17 at the west end of Rockland, with a potential daily drive-in tra„c numbering in the hundreds. «The study showed that being close to the market was key,» said France Lalonde. «In business, you want to promote and maintain local shopping. What you want people to say is ‘Hey, I no longer have to go out of town.’» Once the location was conrmed and other factors considered in the business plan, groundbreaking on the new outlet began in September 2014 under the experienced guidance of Michanie Construction. The engineering rm, LRL, began mapping out the blueprints for the 27,000-square-foot premises, keeping inmind ‘green guidelines’ for energy e„ciency in all aspects of the design, including use of LED lighting where feasible, and also taking into consideration the accessibility needs of customers who might be wheelchair-bound or need a cane or walker to get about.» «We visited lots of other outlets and types of stores to help us with our (design) choices,» said France Lalonde. «We checked out new trends and ideas in layout design.» She and her fellow co-owners/operators did a lot of travelling for their on-site design research and they met and talked with many successful businessowners, gathering input for the nal interior design phase. Once the nal plan was determi- ned, the sole problemwas having to deal with the realities of winter construction season, especially the past winter’s brutal weather. Still, less than a year after the start of construction, the doors of the new location in the SmartCentre Plaza at 3015 Richelieu Road in Rockland, opened June 9 for an inaugural evening and for the general public for the June 11 grand opening.
