IFC Letter from the test director, Welcome to the 64th annual Tucumcari Bull Test Sale. Big news at the test station! We have expanded! Cooperators have invested in adding eight additional GrowSafe® digital feed intake systems to the station. This essentially doubled how many cattle are being evaluated for feed efficiency. All told, we tested 288 animals for the 2024-2025 season. This year we are also welcoming 22 cooperators from four states (New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, and Oklahoma). With this increase in capacity, we will now be testing 65 heifers for feed efficiency as well. Understanding the efficiency of females, along with selecting proven efficient bulls, will greatly accelerate genetic improvement in a herd, extend your forage, and, with proper management, increase stocking rates, which in turn boosts profits. You may expect a few changes with our sale order this year. We will begin the sale by highlighting the top-ranking bulls of each breed, followed by Angus, Charolais, Red Angus SimAngus/Simmental, Hereford, Braunvieh, LimFlex, Salers, Akaushi, and commercial bulls. We will then be selling performance tested and ranch raised females at the end of the sale. As the industry continues to focus on sustainability, the genetics being tested at Tucumcari are going to help producers head in the right direction. Whether these bulls or heifers pass on their proven traits to their daughters to better utilize forage or improve the cost of gain of their calves in the feed lot, producers will benefit either way We will once again be hosting a live auction beginning at 1:00pm MT at the TFET sale barn, located at the Rex Kirksey Ag Science Center in Tucumcari, NM. DELIVERY, FRIEGHT, and GUARANTEE CONSIDERATIONS: All bull sales totaling $6,000 or more per buyer will be delivered up to 300 miles free of charge. In sale totals under $6,000, we guarantee no bull will cost more than $250 per head for delivery within the 300-mile radius of the Tucumcari Bull Test station. Any additional transportation needs must be negotiated between the buyer and seller. To ensure the safe delivery of cattle, bulls must be transferred at appropriate facilities (sale barns, fair grounds, vet clinics, or at the ranch). Cattle that remain at the facility will be allowed a 7 day grace period. CONTEMPORARY GROUPING With the addition of the Growsafe® feeders and new pen configuration at the TFET test station, new ratio and indexing formulas have been put in place to best assess a bull’s performance. For the 2024/2025 test, growth performance ratios are based WITHIN breed across the entire barn. Feed efficiency, however, is ratio’d within GRP; A or B. The justification for this is animal size at testing and weather. Test Index = .35(ADG BREED Ratio) + .35(WDA BREED Ratio)+.3(Feed Efficiency PEN Ratio) Bulls with less than 8 in their breed, do not have ratio values. Only bulls testing in the top 85%tile will be sold. Percentile Rankings All breed associations compile annual data to create breed average EPD values for each trait they measure. The average value effectively represents a percentile of 50%. A bull’s EPD values are ranked within the range of EPD values of a particular trait and are expressed as a percentile. For example, if the breed average in the Angus breed for Weaning Weight (WW) is +63, and the individual bull’s EPD for WW is +81, his ranking is in the top 10% of the breed. NOTE: EPD values are independent within breed and should not be cross referenced with other breeds. Table 1 demonstrates the current average EPD values for each breed represented in the sale, along with EPD values that rank in the top 10% within the breed. In the catalog you will find the percentile ranking next to each presented EPD for each bull. The Value of Efficiency Both feed efficiency and RFI are approximately 35% heritable. The level of correlations between costs and RFI observed at the Tucumcari Feed Efficiency Test Station, indicate true savings potential from calves out of low RFI bulls. Therefore, selecting bulls with good efficiency numbers, should result in efficient calves; both in the feedyard and as replacements on the ranch. With rising feed costs and increased drought, these forage stretcher bulls will help improve the financial and resource status of your ranch.

After five years of data had been collected, feed cost (60 days on feed), and cost of gain (COG) were evaluated in yearling bulls (Table 2). There is a significant relationship trend between RFI and COG and total feed cost. Cost of gain ranged from $.58 for -3 RFI rated bulls to over $.81 in bulls rating a +3. This translates to significant savings in feed costs. Negative rating RFI bulls saved producers on average $60 per bull in feed over the 60 day feeding period. Results indicate the more negative the RFI, the more cost effective the animal is to feed. RFI values for all the 2024 bulls will be available by March 3, 2025 on the website (tucbulltest.nmsu.edu) or will also be available sale day on the supplemental sheet.

Top Ranking Report for Day 67 of the 120 day test! This report provides the raw performance bulls that are performing in the top 10% of their breed contemporary group at the 67-day mark. In the report, bulls are ranked based on average daily gain (ADG) and weight per day of age (WDA) within breed. Not all bulls have intake data at this time, so efficiency was not included. The supplemental sheet will provide all the data (including carcass, frame, and scrotal) from the sale bulls for the 120 day test. The supplemental will be available at the sale and on the tucbulltest.nmsu.edu website, and through the DVAuction website.

The family ranch was established in 1907 in Grady, New Mexico; and Charolais were introduced to the ranch in 1965. The Grau’s are the longest continually tested ranch at the Tucumcari Bull Test. We founded our small program in 2004 with our initial purchase of 40 cows from the Larson program at Sharon Springs, Kansas. All black calves born on our place are the product of either AI or ET as we don’t run any black clean up bulls. All calves have their parentage verified by blood test and have their EPDs enhanced by the Angus GS Genomic test. We strive to produce bulls and females that are trouble free, easy keeping and docile. We have been taking bulls to the Tucumcari Bull test for over ten years and have won the test once and have the most efficient bull on test a couple times. We annually send bulls to the test not only to be able to market a few bulls outside our home area and expand our bull market but also, and more importantly, to identify which cows of ours produce the best and most efficient and best gaining calves. The long-lasting goal of Lust Angus is to raise Angus cattle that work for the commercial cattleman in a real-world environment. All bulls selling for $4,000 or more are guaranteed against breeding injury for the first breeding season. Breeding season is defined as the 90-day period following the first turnout of the bulls. If a replacement bull is available, he will be provided; or if the buyer prefers, credit will be given toward a bull at the following year’s sale, less salvage value of the injured bull. Salvage value will be valued at $1,800 and Lust Angus will provide credit on any amount over that. The buyer will receive whatever the actual salvage value is. Valigura Simmental is so excited to kick off the spring 2025 Bull sale season with you! We are located in Estancia, NM and have been farming and ranching here for the last 13 years. We feel that God has been leading us to work fervently towards the goal of being your seedstock provider for Sim-Angus cattle here in the Land of Enchantment! It has been so interesting to see how simmental cattle have improved into an excellent maternal animal over the years. We are extremely blessed and thankful to be raising our children (Autumn 10, Aubrey 8, Theodore 4) within the agricultural community. We are first generation farming and ranching and we know all too well about how much hard work and dedication goes into this industry. If you love what you do you’ll never work a day in your life! Valigura Simmental has 50 bulls available this spring. Our reference sires include CLRS Kangaroo, JRA Kingston, KBHR Keynote, LCDR Reserve, J-C Bronc, HA Justice. We are excited to offer you a very diverse genetic lineup-there is something for every herd. At the midpoint of TFET we had the two highest indexing bulls. Kangaroo looks to be a must-use sire for years to come, he keeps calving ease in check while also supplying excellent terminal traits. Everybody loves a black baldy and nobody does it like Reserve while being a purebred Simmental. Keynote is in a league of his own in the Simmental breed with numbers that are unheard of and a phenotype to go along with it. 2025 looks to be a promising year in the cattle business and we are so thankful that you are taking the time to consider us for your breeding decisions.
