Our open mornings are over for another year and I would like to praise the wonderful Year 8s for escorting families around our school and sharing their knowledge so confidently. Well done! It has been a busy week in the Art Department as both Year 10 and Year 12 went on trips. Year 10 visited Kew Gardens for inspiration ahead of their Batik project for their Art GCSE, while Year 12 went to the National Portrait Gallery for a workshop on experimental portraiture where they created their own works. I look forward to seeing their creations! In the Sixth Form our Year 13 Geography students completed their fieldwork trips this week with visits to consider different aspects of Bushy Park, collecting data to support their coursework. I am very much looking forward to welcoming Year 7 families to this evening’s Bingo Night. A huge thank you to our wonderful Friends of Waldegrave who have organised the event. HEALTH AND WELLBEING
World Mental Health Day takes place next week and this year the Mental Health Foundation has chosen to focus on the overwhelming impact of relentless bad news. Constantly reading negative news from around the world can feel like a lot to take in – and that’s because it is. The conflicts and suffering that people face around the globe can leave us feeling powerless. In the digital age, managing how much information we take on board is really challenging as an adult, for our children it might feel impossible. This all takes a toll on our mental health. The Mental Health Foundation has produced a set of top tips for managing those feelings of overwhelm, including setting boundaries with the news, phone free times, and giving yourself permission to rest. There are also some practical ways to manage doomscrolling linked here.

Additionally, Young Minds has produced this advice to help young people talk about any worries they might have about global issues.
A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 7
Year 7 have been discussing student voice activities during tutor time this week. Pupils have volunteered to take part in the 5 student parliament committees; Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI), Environment, Curriculum, Community and Healthy Schools. Student Parliament is a group of student representatives from each form and each year group, who meet to discuss issues, make decisions and influence change within the school. Thank you to Matilda H, Hannah G, Sophie H, Radhika U, Harper P, Sophia S, Chloe R, Maisy F, Juliette V, Ellen B, Arabella S, Liberty B, Ines L, Matilda K, Lorraine CM, Ruzgar C, Zawadi W, Maya S, Mola L, Poppy K and Arianna E for taking up these roles. Alongside this they have been allocating their form reps who will be undertaking a variety of roles throughout the school year, from Form Captain to Sports Captain and Information monitor. It has been great to see Year 7 putting themselves forward for these roles. Year 7 have been earning plenty of Epraise again this week, keep it up. The student leaderboard is very close at the top, well done to Annabelle H, Jemima P, Sophia S, Annie B, Ellen B who have earned over 25 points. Your child will be arriving home with a sponsor card for Readathon (Read for Good) as the English Department likes to use this opportunity to encourage independent reading whilst collecting for a really good cause. We would like Year 7 to read as much as possible over the month of October and collect sponsorship money for doing so. It would be great if every child could contribute something: small or big. Sponsor money will be used to provide books and storytellers in children’s wards in hospitals around the country. Some of the money will also help us buy books for the school library as well. Sponsorship money may be received by you at different times - it is fine to transfer it to Parent Pay as you receive it. The deadline for contributions is Friday November 7. Thank you so much for your support and encouragement. Perhaps you would like to join them in cosying up with a good book? Another exciting date for your diaries is Pink Day which will take place on Friday 24th October. On this day we encourage students in Year 7 to come to school dressed in Pink and make a donation to charity in return for doing so. Donations can be made via Parent Pay and all proceeds raised will be split between Cancer Research and CoppaFeel breast cancer charities. We’ll end the half-term in a blaze of pink!

BOOK OF THE MONTH
‘Heartless’ by Marissa Meyer Heartless is a prequel to Alice in Wonderland as it follows the story of the Queen of Hearts and how she came to be so harsh. The young girl, Catherine is destined to marry to royalty, but finds herself drawn to a mysterious joker with many tricks up his sleeve. The story is set in the Kingdom of Hearts, but dips into the backstory of the different kingdoms in the land. It is a romance story with drama and lots of heartbreak. I love this book because it connects so well with the story of Alice in Wonderland and is described in such a way that allows you to imagine the magical world in your head like you’re watching a movie. This book may be a little slow into the action but if you push through it is really worth it in the end.

MUSIC TASTER SESSIONS FOR ALL The music department will be running a taster session for the whole school on the week 15th-19th. Feel free to turn up to any of the open rehearsals to have a go! All are welcome. See you there! If you have any questions, come over the Performance Arts Block or ask your Music teacher.

Junior and Teen Football Sessions for children and young people, 5 to 16 years old who have neurodiverse needs or disabilities and would like to play in an inclusive environment. Time: 11.15am-12.15pm players 11 to 16 years in secondary school 12.15pm-1.15pm players 5 to 11 years in primary school Day: Saturdays Dates: 13 th September to 13 th December (term time) Venue: Whitton Sports Centre, Twickenham School, Percy Road, Whitton, TW2 6JW. Cost: £4.50 per person per session. There is no charge for parents, carers or support staff.
FOOTBALL Day : Saturdays Time : players age 11 to 16 - 11.15am-12.15pm players age 5 to 11 - 12.15pm-1.15pm Adult players - 11.15am-12.15pm Dates : 13 September to 13 December (not 1 Nov) Venue: Whitton Sports & Fitness Centre Cost: £4.50 per person per session Coached by coaches from Kew Park Rangers (KPR), a local England Football 3 Star Accredited Community Club, footballers practice a variety of techniques and skills to develop their agility, balance and coordination. KPR encourage players to join in competitively and socially. These sessions take place indoors in a sports hall. FUSION ADULT DANCE Day : Mondays Time : 6.00-7.00pm Dates : 8 September to 15 December (not 27 Oct) Fun, energetic and social dance sessions with Combination Dance which will increase fitness, mobility, self-confidence and teamwork. Performers will learn choreographed dance routines to a variety of music genre. RISE TO SHINE SWIMMING Day : Tuesdays Time : 6-6.45pm Dates : 9 September to 16 December (not 28 Oct) Venue: Teddington Pools & Fitness Centre Cost: £65 per person for the term Part of our RISE to Shine project, training athletes aged 8-18 years who live or go to school in the borough to compete for Richmond in the Venue: Teddington Sports Centre Cost: £52 per person for the term
MULTI-SPORTS Day : Saturdays Time : 12.15-1.15pm Dates : 13 September to 13 December (not 1 Nov) Venue: Whitton Sports & Fitness Centre Cost: £4.50 per person per session Activities for children 8+, young people and adults Delivered by Brentford Community Sports Trust. Come along and join in with a variety of different sports and exercise activities. These sessions are fun and engaging with the opportunity to try lots of different activities . FUSION JUNIOR AND TEEN DANCE Day : Saturdays Time : 11:30am-12.15pm (Yr7 +) 12.30-1.00 pm (YrR to Yr6)* *expression of interest as not currently running Dates : 13 September – 13 December (not 25 Oct or 1 November) Venue: Up and Running, Teddington Cost: £54 per person for the term These weekly, fun and lively dance classes are led by Combination Dance Company and are ideal for developing gross motor skills, flexibility, self expression and confidence.
