BECOMING A MICHIGAN STATE FAN Why I Root for the Spartans

Growing up in a University of Michigan family, you can guess just how shocking it was when I told my family I was going to Michigan State University instead. It was like a cardinal sin in a Michigan family! For context, my grandpa, uncle, and sister all went to the University of Michigan, and we watched Wolverine football games every Saturday in the fall. But when it came time to choose a college, Michigan State felt like home. I liked the collaboration I found at Michigan State, and the set-up of its campus was much more appealing to me. (Remember, this is just MY experience. I don’t look down on anyone who went to U of M; if I did, my family wouldn’t be too happy!) To his credit, my dad was the one who told me that, regardless of the school I chose for college, I had to get football tickets. Up until that point, I was never a big football fan. As I said, we watched Michigan games all season long when I was a kid, and, of course, we rooted for the Detroit Lions. But it wasn’t until my dad convinced me to go to Michigan State football games that I understood why people enjoyed it so much — and I became a lifelong fan.

my college career, and that passion for the game carried over into my life after graduation. I’m fully invested every week, and I even like to watch our opponents play the week before we play them. I need to know what Michigan State is up against! My family also knows that if it’s a close game, they can find me sitting on the edge of the couch in the dark just staring at the TV. I take Michigan State football very seriously, but for a good reason. There’s something about football you can’t compare to anything else. Sure, there’s the excitement of game-winning drives and watching your team dominate another, but for me, it’s about so much more than that. Personally, I love the camaraderie it evokes among fans. For example, I have a group of people I regularly text during Michigan State games. We all know each other from college, and since graduating, we have naturally gone our separate ways. But come every college football Saturday, we’re connecting and hashing out each play. It may be difficult to talk or catch up at any other time because we’re all naturally busy, but Michigan State football brings us together every weekend in the fall. There’s something to be said for that.

This year, I’m cautiously optimistic about the Spartans. Our defensive line is putting up a fantastic fight in every game, and we’ve held our own against some of the Big 10’s biggest opponents! (I’m still excited about our overtime victory against Nebraska earlier this year!) I always have high hopes going into the season, but this year feels really special for Michigan State. As the entire state of Michigan prepares for our state’s biggest football day of the year — Thanksgiving — I hope you take a few moments to appreciate this time. While it’s not always easy being a Lions fan (and as a Michigan State fan, I get it!), it’s these traditions and connections that make this game special. There’s nothing else quite like sharing in a victory, the camaraderie, and tradition with your fellow fans.

Go Spartans!

Today, I’m a diehard Michigan State fan. Football Saturdays became a big part of

A Homeowner’s Quick Guide on the Differences Are You Renovating, Remodeling, Restoring, or Refurbishing?

GIVE THE SUIT NEW LIFE Janet Davis Can Improve Suits Before a Formal Event

Remodeling If you’re remodeling, that means you intend to completely transform the layout and structure of a building, changing the usage of space. It’s costlier than renovations and may include various services from professionals like architects, plumbers, and electricians. Before you remodel your space, don’t forget to consider your budget, resources, and time — a remodeling project may require much more time than you’d expect, especially when coordinating multiple services. Also, remember that while renovations don’t usually require a permit, remodeling almost always does. Restoration Think of a local historical building — it’s probably undergone a restoration at one point or another. Restorations involve returning a building to its former state rather than replacing or updating any components. Because restorations try to achieve authenticity, new utilities such as A/C, furnace, or fire alarms are often installed in a concealed manner. Refurbishment If you’re planning to improve a home’s sustainability and energy efficiency, you’re likely looking at a refurbishment project, which includes improving building decor, cleaning, re-equipping, and retrofitting. Refurbishment aims to restore a building to its former state, while improving the building’s overall performance. Thanks for joining us, and we hope these terms help you when you enter your own home construction journey!

A nationwide survey shows that people born between 1965–1980 are more likely to remodel an old home than purchase a new one. You’ve probably had thoughts about buying a fixer-upper, as well, whether you’d be a first-time homeowner or looking to expand your real estate assets. But did you know there’s a very specific difference between remodeling an old home versus renovating, restoring, or refurbishing it? Here are a few key differences. Renovations When renovating a home, you are typically returning a building to an improved condition without altering the original design very much. This includes replacing and upgrading present components of the property to meet required standards. Renovation projects often are completed to increase the value of buildings and are finished in a shorter period of time with a lower budget than most other projects. Why are renovations cost- effective? When you don’t have to create an entirely different layout for the property, it takes out some of the costs of designing and extra materials for your project. To start planning, pick out the parts of the project you can do yourself and the parts you can’t. Then, hire qualified professionals to complete the necessary aspects. Renovations often include repairs like fixing the light or plumbing fixtures, repairing cracks in the wall, and updating an old ceiling.

We’ve all had it happen. You just got invited to a formal event, and you know you can rely on your trusty suit jacket to dress you up for the occasion. But when you pull it out of the closet, suddenly you realize it’s seen better days! Before you rush to the nearest department store for a new one, consider an alternative: dry cleaning. After all, if it’s been a while since you last wore your suit jacket or since you had it cleaned, trusting the experts to bring it back to life just might do the trick — and save you lots of money. Cleaning Up the Lint The way you store your suits can be vital to how long they last and how good they look. Suits should be hung immediately after they are worn, and they should be stored in a cotton bag in a cool, dark closet. However, this doesn’t always happen. Life gets in the way, and it’s easy to forget how to store your suit! Plus, if it’s been a long time since you wore your jacket, dust, lint, and other contaminants can build up on your suit. With a dry- cleaning job, this natural wear can disappear. Catching Old Stains While it’s preferred that you have your suit dry-cleaned after every wear, we understand this isn’t feasible. As long as you properly store your suit after wear and dry clean it regularly to remove stains, you shouldn’t need a dry cleaning. Remember, if you’re not a stain expert, you shouldn’t attempt to be one with your best clothing items! you may miss a stain! When the gunk that cakes on your clothes sits for a long time — especially on fabric as vulnerable as suit material — it can degrade the fabric. The best way to prevent additional damage while lifting as much of the stain as possible is to dry clean it. Finding the Minor Details A loose button here and a straggling thread there can make cleaning your suit on your own very difficult and potentially harmful to your garment. Instead, trust a dry-cleaning expert, who will know how to clean your suit with extra care and do these minor repairs for free. Not only will your suit look and feel clean, but it will get the upgrade it needs, too. As you and your family prepare to don your Sunday best, don’t forget the value of a great clean for your suit! Tell your loved ones about Janet Davis Cleaners’ expertise when it comes to suit jacket cleaning and restoration, and attend your next event in style.

AN EXPERT GUIDE TO PROPER TABLECLOTH MAINTENANCE

concentrating on each spot, too. Additionally, opt for cool or warm water, which can be less harsh on delicate but stylish fabrics. If there are still stains after washing, consider expert guidance or an additional spot treatment. DO NOT dry the tablecloth with stains. This can cement a stain into the fabric. Dry It You can finish a tablecloth in two ways. If you don’t plan to iron it, remove it from the dryer immediately after the cycle is finished and lay it flat on the table to avoid wrinkling. Fold it up after it cools and put it away if you’re not using it. If you do iron it, remove the tablecloth from the dryer while it’s still

The dining room table is the main focus of Thanksgiving. Some hosts go all out — adorning their tables with festive plates, napkins, and gourds — while others opt for simple decor and let the food speak for itself. Regardless of where you fall on that spectrum, one piece is bound to make an appearance at your next holiday meal: the tablecloth! After the turkey and its fixings are gobbled up — or if you pull out the tablecloth and notice imperfections — be sure to clean, dry, and store your tablecloth the right way to ensure it’s a staple in many Thanksgiving celebrations to come.

Drip some of the mixture onto the stain, and use the back of a spoon to rub the cleaning compound into the stain. Wash It Once every spot is treated, it’s time to wash. If you spot-treated the material, you may not need to add more detergent to your machine. The soap already in the cloth will lift and clean the rest of the material, while

Why You Should Visit New England for Thanksgiving

WHY YOU SHOULDVISIT NEW ENGLAND During Your Thanksgiving Weekend

Last year, travel restrictions kept many families from gathering together in their homes for Thanksgiving dinner. This year, it appears that people will be able

As for what you could do when you’re in New England for your Thanksgiving weekend, there are a few popular destinations you just have to see for yourself. First and foremost among these are the Plimoth Patuxet Museums. When you visit, you’ll be transported back in time to one of the earliest settlements in the United States, where the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag people shared the first Thanksgiving dinner. Other fun destinations in that immediate area also include wandering the quaint historic downtowns of Ipswich, Sturbridge, or several other colonial era towns. You can also find tons of fun shopping destinations in Beverly, Massachusetts. If you want your experience to be a little more rural, you can travel out to Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire, or Woodstock, Vermont, to experience a true traditional Thanksgiving celebration at Billings Farm and Museum. Even though your family might not be used to traveling for Thanksgiving, how many opportunities will you have to visit Thanksgiving’s birthplace during the season? It’s the kind of vacation you don’t want to miss!

to travel freely to most locations. While a “destination Thanksgiving” might not be something you’ve ever considered, for some families, it can mean the perfect blend of quality fun and family time in an exciting new city. So, why not take advantage and bring your family to visit New England, the part of the country where Thanksgiving began? If you need more reasons than just the origin of a famous holiday, consider the scenery. If you’ve never visited New England in the fall, it’s

something that every person should do at least once in their lives. The variety of colors on display in the trees throughout the quaint downtowns and nearby forests is completely unique to that part of the country. There’s a reason that “visiting Boston in the fall” has become not only a popular vacation but also part of the American lexicon as well.
