M o t h e r , I don’t mean to criti cize you, but you are a better driver ‘inner’ than a driver ‘outer’.” Thus did tile family “caboose” suc cinctly describe my erratic weaving as I back the family car out of the driveway. Now, if I wanted, I could rationalize my inadequacy in this particular area of driving. The par sonage was built in days when autos were taller and narrower. 'For this, wide driveways were not necessary. Further, land is a very valuable com modity, especially in southern Cali fornia. Neighbors property adjoin each other with nary an inch to spare. The result: narrow driveways. Being a woman, this mother of nine drives like one—especially back ing up or out. My reactions to a nar row, slightly hemmed-in driveway are such that any male, regardless of age, will exult in his masculinity. Anybody knows, of course, that men are ‘dead-eye Dicks” when it comes to backing cars out of driveways. But what would I gain from ration alizing? It cannot change facts. Only attempts to improve my record can do that. In the meantime, I must an swer for my own record, whether or not I am criticized. This thought rings a bell regard ing a biblical admonition on personal responsibility. “So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God” (Romans 14:12). Actually, this goes for both believer and unbeliever. Nor is ignorance of law or facts an excuse. Men’s governments con firm this fact. So that whether I weave a car uncertainly out of a driveway to the concern and conster nation of others, or carelessly “drive” and/or misuse this gift of life from God’s hand, I must answer for myself. Maybe it’s about time some of us children of God had a bit of criticism from a “Mark.” Especially when he criticizes gently and with love as my nine-year-old did. It might pull us up short, increasing our purpose and power for God. P.S. Ladies, the only area in which I’ll take a “back seat” to men drivers is when I am backing out our drive way!
