DEFENDER OF THE FAITH ELECTED TO HIGHEST SOUTHERN BAPTIST POST I t w a s w i t h d e e p satisfaction and sincere gratitude to God that we received the announcement that Dr. Kenneth Owen White, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Houston, Texas for the last ten years, had been elected to the presidency of the South ern Baptist Convention, representing ten million Southern Baptists. Three chief reasons for rejoicing on our part that Dr. White has been chosen for this high post are: First, because of what it will mean to the church in this critical tirfle when everywhere men are repudiating the faith and denying the Lord that bought them. Dr. White has been so uncompromis ing and so outspoken in his defense of the fundamental truths of the Gos pel that his influence cannot but be felt even outside of his own denomi nation. Second, because of what it will mean to Dr. and Mrs. White, their son, also a minister, and daugh ter, and their families, to be so hon ored and entrusted with such grave responsibility. It is characteristic of Dr. White that he wrote us asking us to pray “earnestly” for him! Third, because of what it means to Biola, where Kenneth Owen White re ceived his first training for the min istry and from which he graduated in 1924. Here also he met and mar ried another Biola graduate (of 1925) Pearl Woodworth, whose late father was one of the Institute’s best friends in the early days. He and Chancellor Louis T. Talbot were intimate friends for more than twenty-five years and kept in touch with each other until Mr. Woodworth’s death. Like proud parents, Biola delights in every achievement of her “children,” but particularly are we filled with par donable pride when such triumphs for the Gospel as this take place. Dr. White, a native of London, Eng land, now 60 years of age, holds Master’s and Doctor’s degrees from Louisville, Ky. Southern Baptist Sem inary; has travelled abroad as leader in the New Life Christian movement; and will also serve as president of the Texas Baptist Convention until November of this year. In reporting this event, the Kansas City Star of May 9, had this to say: “Mr. White’s election was given special significance because of his clear stand in the long-smouldering dispute over liber alism vs. conservatism in Southern Baptist-supported educational institu tions. At last year’s meeting in San Francisco, he sponsored a resolution charging doctrinal deviations, and
