A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEADTEACHER

further donations to this fantastic cause please visit ParentPay. Our open mornings are over for another year and I would like to praise the wonderful Year 8s for escorting families around our school and sharing their knowledge so confidently. Well done! It has been a busy week in the Art Department as both Year 10 and Year 12 went on trips. Year 10 visited Kew Gardens for inspiration ahead of their Batik project for their Art GCSE, while Year 12 went to the National Portrait Gallery for a workshop on experimental portraiture where they created their own works. I look forward to seeing their creations! In the Sixth Form our Year 13 Geography students completed their fieldwork trips this week with visits to consider different aspects of Bushy Park, collecting data to support their coursework. I am very much looking forward to welcoming Year 7 families to this evening’s Bingo Night. A huge thank you to our wonderful Friends of Waldegrave who have organised the event. If you would like to get more involved please contact the team on fow@waldegravesch.org Feeling a valued member of our community is central to our ethos at Waldegrave and we know that despite our varied backgrounds and beliefs, what unites us far outweighs our differences. We respect and value learning, one another and our environment. With that in mind I would like to wish all of our Jewish families Shabbat Shalom, and our whole school community a peaceful and restful weekend.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

World Mental Health Day takes place next week and this year the Mental Health Foundation has chosen to focus on the overwhelming impact of relentless bad news. Constantly reading negative news from around the world can feel like a lot to take in – and that’s because it is. The conflicts and suffering that people face around the globe can leave us feeling powerless. In the digital age, managing how much information we take on board is really challenging as an adult, for our children it might feel impossible. This all takes a toll on our mental health. The Mental Health Foundation has produced a set of top tips for managing those feelings of overwhelm, including setting boundaries with the news, phone free times, and giving yourself permission to rest. There are also some practical ways to manage doomscrolling linked here.

Additionally, Young Minds has produced this advice to help young people talk about any worries they might have about global issues.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 12

Over the last week there have been a variety of activities keeping our Year 12 students busy. Last Wednesday, a number of our Year 12 students took part in the Sixth Form Borough Netball Tournament hosted at Waldegrave. Well done to everyone who took part, there were some great matches! Students were also asked if they wanted to be student parliament sixth form leads. By taking on this amazing role, they could become leads of a chosen committee. Waldegrave student parliament is split into five committees: Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI), Environment (Eco), Curriculum, Community and Healthy Schools. They will take part in frequent meetings amongst their committee to share ideas and goals for the rest of the year. We strongly advise students to put themselves forward, in order to help contribute to the life of the school. It was lovely to see so many sixth form students at the MacMillan coffee morning today buying lots of yummy cakes and supporting such a fantastic charity. A reminder that all our year 12 students must remember to wear their lanyard whilst on the school site at all times as a safeguarding measure. If they have forgotten their lanyard they must go to sixth form reception to get a temporary one for the day. Mr Reynolds launched Gold Duke of Edinburgh last week, if students missed the meeting they can join the Google classroom, code iq5cy36r. This information is also on their tutor group Google classrooms.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘Brit(ish)’ by Afua Hirsch This is a thought-provoking memoir that explores the complexities of living as a mixed race woman in Britain. It is centred on ideas of identity and is broken down into the sections: Where are you from, Origins, Bodies, Heritage, Places, Class, The New Black and The Door of No Return. In each section, Hirsch examines British attitudes towards race by tracing it back to the slave trade. She analyses the problem of how we are meant to live in the ‘raceless’ society that Britain so desires, without first acknowledging Britain’s involvement in the slave trade. Hirsch also interweaves her own experiences, as she discusses how she feels alienated and marginalised, “But for me, growing up as such a minority in a world so hostile to what it was that stood me apart, otherness was my identity.” This book is a must-read for sixth formers who want to better understand the complexity of British identity. As a memoir, Hirsch used the storytelling of her own personal experience to bring these important issues to life.
