MANAGING SCHOOL ANXIETY WELLBEING TEAM
School anxiety can be an issue for some children. Age - and developmental separation from parents (which usually begins in infancy and typically resolves around kindergarten age) can be prolonged or more difficult for some. Seeing your child experience school anxiety can be difficult, however, in most instances children respond quickly and positively when their anxiety subsides and they settle into their school day.
Strategies that might be useful if your child experiences school anxiety include:
• Morning rituals involving a specific place where you say “ See you later ” to your child. (“ See you later ” is often received better than “ Goodbye ”.)
• Make sure that your child has met up with a friend or is engaged in some kind of activity before you leave.
• Give your child a hug or kiss and let them know that you will pick them up after school (or tell them who will). Try to be on time and meet in a predetermined location.
• Remain calm, matter - of - fact and do not linger. Once you have said “ See you later ” it is important that you leave rather than prolonging the farewell.
• Never sneak away without saying “ See you later ” - this has the potential to increase anxiety.
• Allow your child to bring something belonging to you to school, such as a note or a piece of fabric with your perfume / aftershave on it.
• Reflect on the positive things that occur throughout the school day. Discuss these the following morning on your way to school.
• Try to manage your own emotions, children are very perceptive to their parent/carers levels of distress.

KEEPING YOUR CHILD SAFE ONLINE AT HOME
Many devices or programs we use come with some sort of risk being connected to the internet. To keep you and your family safe online at home there are a number of tools that you can use. These are commonly referred to as Parental Guidance tools and in most cases these options already are on your devices, you just don ’ t know it. See below for some options of how you can protect your child at home.
Parental Controls
Wifi Routers may also have a number of options inbuilt to help support. From time limits to website blocking, the bonus of having network wide restrictions is that anyone that connects to your network can have your predetermined set of ‘ rules ’ applied. Game Consoles are almost in every home which also have a number of Parent Control security options. These are device specific but a quick search online can help. Child - friendly search engines aim to exclude inappropriate sites and material from search results, while making sure content relevant to the search is provided. Whilst no parental tool is 100% effective, implementing some of these measures can help in giving you piece of mind and build good online habits.
Parental controls are software tools that allow you to monitor and limit what your child sees and does online.
They can be set up to do things like :
•
Block your child from accessing specific websites, apps or functions (like using a device ’ s camera, or the ability to buy things). Filter different kinds of content — such as ‘ adult ’ or sexual content, content that may promote self - harm, eating disorders, violence, drugs, gambling, racism and terrorism. Allow you to monitor your child ’ s use of connected devices, with reports on the sites they visit and the apps they use, how often and for how long.
•
•
•
Set time limits , blocking access after a set time.
While you can download external software to assist in this, most Apple (OSX Parental Control) and Microsoft (Microsoft Family) products come with tools pre installed on the device.

The Student Dress Code aims to:

Students are expected to comply with this Student Dress Code while traveling to and from school, during school hours and when attending College activities. Uniform items can be purchased from A - plus uniforms retail outlet located at 21/8 Oleander Drive South Morang. Hours of operation are Monday to Thursday 9.00 - 5.00, Friday 9.00 - 3.00 and Saturday 9.00 - 12.00. https://www.aplusschoolwear.com.au/Default.aspx Please contact the College Wellbeing team to discuss support that we may be able to provide to families experiencing difficulty meeting uniform costs, including information about eligibility for uniform support through State Schools Relief.

CURRICULUM CONNECTIONS
WHAT IS ATAR & HOW IS IT CALCULATED?
GEORGE LEARNING SPECIALIST (MATHEMATICS)
One of VCE ’ s big mysteries is how the magical ATAR is calculated. Here ’ s a brief overview of what is done.
AGGREGATE SCORE BEFORE ATAR
The word “ aggregate ” means something that is formed by several parts. For example, a cake is an aggregate because it is made from flour, milk, sugar etc. The Aggregate Score is calculated by adding the Scaled Study Scores of English, the next three highest Scaled Study Scores and 10% of a fifth and sixth Study Score where applicable.
WHAT IS THE ATAR?
Mathematical Methods
Business Management
English
Psychology
Physics
Philosophy
The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is a number that ranks students according to their academic performance in VCE. It is used by universities in their selection process.
Scaled Study Score
32
43
41
39
37
25
Aggregate Score
It is a number up to 99.95 with increments of 0.05 that represents a student ’ s rank within Victoria.
= English + Top 3 Subjects + 10% of 5 th and 6 th subjects
=
32 + 43 + 41 + 39 + 3.7 + 2.5
For example, if you score 99.95, this is akin to being in the top 0.05% of Victoria. Likewise, an ATAR score of 80.00 is indicative of being in the top 20%.
= 161.2
FINALLY, ATAR IS CALCULATED FROM THE AGGREGATE SCORE
THEN WHAT ’ S A STUDY SCORE?
The ATAR score comes directly from the aggregate score. All students aggregate scores are placed on a scale from lowest to highest and this is used to determine the percentiles. With each year ’ s esults VTAC (Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre) provides a table which shows the relationship between the two numbers. An example of such a table from a few years ago can be seen below.
The Study Score is value out of 50 which ranks a student's performance for a particular VCE (Victorian Certificate of Education) subject. Completed year 12 subjects are each given a Study Score which are then used to calculate the ATAR.
SCALED STUDY SCORE
ATAR
Aggregate Score
The word “ scale ” means to adjust a number by a certain amount or proportion. For example, if you scale up someone ’ s wage, you are increasing the amount that the person receives. You may have heard of certain subjects being “ scaled. ” This is when a number is either added to or deducted from a Study Score. It is used to make all VCE subjects comparable in terms of the study score, regardless of some subjects being more difficult than others. Scaling was introduced so that there is a level playing field and students can pick subjects they are interested in without worrying about how it will affect their ATAR.
99.90
208.98
95.00
173.89
91.00
162.57
90.00
160.27
80.00
142.29
In that particular year an Aggregate Score of 161.2 would be the equivalent to an ATAR of approximately 90.50.
